Beautify Chula Vista Day is Almost Here!

The annual Beautify Chula Vista Day is back! On Saturday October 15th, join hundreds of volunteers at Memorial Park and Rice Canyon at Discovery Park as they work to make a difference. Last year, 8,000 pounds of litter were removed. With your help, we can remove even more this year.

Sign up today with friends and loved ones to do your part for the environment. You’ll make an impact and feel great. Plus, you’ll take home a commemorative t-shirt and reusable water bottle to mark the occasion, while supplies last.  Volunteer credit will also be available.

Remember: All volunteers must sign a waiver. Those under 18 will need a parent or guardian signature, too. There will be waivers at the site, but you can save time by printing one at home, filling it out, and bringing it with you to the cleanup. Sun protection and closed-toed shoes are encouraged. We’ll see you there!

Our Executive Director is Back!

Big news! I Love A Clean San Diego’s Executive Director, Pauline Martinson, has returned from a three month sabbatical abroad funded by the Fieldstone Foundation’s Clare Rose Sabbatical program. Here, she shares how her experience has strengthened her leadership of the organization and her love of San Diego:

“As many of you know, I’ve committed 11 wonderful years to I Love A Clean San Diego which afforded me an opportunity to take a three month sabbatical in order to explore myself and seven new countries.  I completely immersed myself in the experience. I met the people, ate the food, drank the wine, (looked in their waste bins) and freely experienced new cultures, sights, sounds, and scenery. It was amazing!

However, while I was traveling, an image kept resurfacing in my mind of San Diego’s beautiful coastline. The stunning seascapes of Biarritz (France), San Sebastian (Spain), and Almalfi coast (Italy) have got nothing on a sunset from San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs.

I’m so happy to be back at I Love A Clean San Diego to witness the staff growth and momentum that continued while I was away.  I feel fortunate to be part of such an influential organization that has dedicated 62 years to environmental stewardship and protecting my favorite parts of San Diego.

I look forward to applying my newfound understanding of global environmental practices to my leadership at I Love A Clean San Diego. I hope you will join me and ILACSD as we continue to improve and expand my favorite city in the world."

Volunteer Spotlight

This month’s spotlight goes to a dedicated group of volunteers from our 32nd annual Coastal Cleanup Day! The FedEx Ground Team, comprised of group leader Sam Sullivan, volunteer Porsha Beasley, and Leandria Kinsey came out to cleanup on September 17th. How’d they get involved? The dedicated trio from Los Angeles and Fullerton were scoping out the scene at the newly added FedEx locations in Oceanside and Otay Mesa when Sam heard about CCD from past FedEx attendees. Sam, who is part of a community board that connects communities to impactful events, was inspired. He spoke to Pauline Martinson, ILACSD’s Executive Director, about how to join the cleanup. Then he and his FedEx ground team joined ILACSD at De Anza cove for the big day. Thank you FedEx Ground Team for your hard work and commitment to Coastal Cleanup Day and I Love A Clean San Diego!

Donor Spotlight: Thank you Sony!

Many of our recent and upcoming events would not be possible without the generosity of donors like Sony. Sony is helping to create a clean San Diego by partnering with us to support our upcoming Fall Social and America Recycles Day campaign. Sony also supported Coastal Cleanup Day and provided a Sony Action Cam to reward the winner of our Coastal Cleanup Day photo contest, pictured above. Thank you for investing in a Clean San Diego, Sony!

Did you know up to 80% of marine debris originates as inland litter? After learning about the plight of pollution in our ocean from ILACSD’s classroom presentation, students at Granger Jr. High dedicated their Saturday to remove an impressive 906 pieces of debris from the Imperial Beach Pier, including items from a shipwreck. Thanks to the Port of San Diego, ILACSD is able to engage students in programs like this, linking knowledge with action! If you or someone you know would like us to visit their classroom, please contact education@cleansd.org!
