Over 900 Students Call for a Sea Change

Kids’ Ocean Day is by far one of our favorite programs that we coordinate each year. You may remember last year’s bi-national event. This year, we decided to move up the coast to Mission Beach, and it certainly did not disappoint - great weather, enthusiastic kids and an incredible aerial art image. Visit our blog to see the final aerial art image that includes nearly 1000 3rd-5th grade students, volunteers and ILACSD staff united for our environment!

How to Recycling Odd Items

As San Diego moves forward with its zero waste plan, recycling and waste diversion is a must. While most of us are familiar with recycling paper, cans, and hard plastics, other items such as mattresses, can frustrate even the most dedicated recyclers. Read more on our blog about Leila’s solutions for hard to recycle items. You may be surprise by what you can recycle outside of your curbside bin.

Volunteer Spotlight

We are excited to recognize the USS Higgins volunteer group for their tremendous effort at Kids’ Ocean Day! The USS Higgins team was eager to assist with over 900 kids during the cleanup and aerial art at South Mission Beach. Without their help, our event would not have been the same!

USS Higgins Chief Petty Officer Mess has been volunteering with ILACSD for over two years and they show no signs of stopping soon. Recently returning from an eight month long deployment in the Persian Gulf, the USS Higgins volunteers were thrilled to be back on land helping to beautify their city and connect with young environmental stewards. Thank you, USS Higgins for your service and dedication to protecting the environment for future generations!

Education Spotlight: Carver Elementary School

June16 education spotlight

What do a snare drum, a mortar trowel, and a headless doll have in common? All were found last week during a campus cleanup at Carver Elementary, where 110 eager students removed an impressive 35 lbs of debris from their local community. A teacher even kept the snare drum frame, with plans to refurbish it with his students. How grateful we are for teachers and students dedicated to environmental education!

And thanks to SDG&E for funding hands-on educational programs like this one.
