Beautify Chula Vista Day

I Love A Clean San Diego and the City of Chula Vista are teaming up again for the 16th annual Beautify Chula Vista Day (BCVD)! Join us on Saturday, October 20 from 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM and help us give back to the Chula Vista community. We are thrilled to expand BCVD this year, adding two additional sites for a total of FOUR locations where volunteers can assist with litter abatement, and projects like graffiti removal, removing vegetation, and more. Make a huge difference by signing up at the Otay Valley Regional Park site! This location has our highest need for volunteers! Volunteers of all ages and large groups are welcome to join in! For more details and to get registered, visit BeautifyChulaVista.org

We encourage all volunteers to help reduce the amount of waste produced at the cleanup by bringing their own reusable items. If you have them, please BYO reusable water bottles, work gloves, and buckets to divert single use plastic supplies from the landfill!

See you there!

Zero Waste Tip: Medication Take Back Day
2018 RX take back day.jpg

Flushing unused or expired prescription medications down the toilet can have harmful effects on the environment and contaminate the local water supply.

Every Spring and Fall, the DEA hosts a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to provide safe disposal of unused medication. Safely disposing of prescription medication helps protect your family while also protecting the local environment. The DEA partners with local agencies to offer additional drop off locations to collect unused or expired medications for the public. Residents can drop off their unused medications on October 27, 2018 from 10 am to 2 pm at nearly 40 additional drop off sites in San Diego County. To find a drop off location near you, visit the National Take Back Initiative website.

Need to safely dispose of medication at another time during the year? Visit WasteFreeSD.org to find a participating Sheriff’s Station or Police Station.

Volunteer Spotlight: Miss Vista Pageant

2018 Volunteer Spotlight Photo.jpg

For October, ILACSD is shining our spotlight on six inspiring volunteers from the Miss Vista Pageant that joined our Watershed Warriors: Vista Cleanup! Jordan (Miss Vista), Camie (Miss Teen Vista), and Priscila (Miss Vista Princess) along with Sandy, Sarah, and Mikaela (Miss Teen Vista Princesses) dedicated their Saturday morning to collecting litter around the community to maintain a beautiful Vista!

The Miss Vista Pageant has provided countless hours of community service since its inception in 1948. Miss Vista is by no means a traditional "beauty" pageant; with the omission of swimsuit and talent competitions, the scores are based on confidence and conversational communication. Each year, this pageant selects ten young women to represent the City of Vista and participate in City, Chamber of Commerce, and local civic events.

Many past winners continue to volunteer for organizations they became familiar with through service with the pageant. ILACSD enjoyed getting the opportunity to work with these community leaders from the Miss Vista Pageant!
