Revitalize Howard Lane Park on December 10
We're excited to add Howard Lane Park to over 110 Adopt-A-Beach/Canyon sites throughout San Diego County this month. To celebrate, join us in revitalizing the park on December 10. We need volunteers to help paint playground equipment, plant trees and stencil nearby storm drains. Join us to spruce up Howard Lane Park at our last public cleanup of the year!

Remember to Recycle This Holiday Season

‘Tis the season to recycle! Remember that fats, oils, and grease from cooking can be recycled at multiple facilities in San Diego. By accumulating cooking oil and disposing it at a local collection facility, you are protecting our oceans and preventing spills due to clogged sewer pipes. If you plan on buying a real tree for the holiday season this year, plan to recycle it as well. Recycling your tree will give it new life as compost, mulch, or wood chips and saves space in our overcrowded landfills. Many waste haulers offer curbside pickup for trees and communities often will have temporary tree recycling drop-off sites. Finding locations for tree and cooking oil recycling is easy! Visit WasteFreeSD.org or call us at 1-800-237-BLUE for more information or to find a drop-off near you.

Plastic bag ban

What You Need to Know About the Plastic Bag Ban

California recently passed Proposition 67 to ban plastic bags in our state. Most of us are probably wondering how will it impact us. Check out the blog to learn what the bag ban means, how it will impact shopping and eco-friendly ideas to reduce plastic bags in other areas.

Pacific Beach Rotaract - ILCSD3

Volunteer Spotlight

ILACSD would like to spotlight the Pacific Beach Rotaract Club for their immense dedication to making a difference! After getting the invitation from another rotary club to participate in our Adopt-A-Beach program, the PB Rotaract Club was hooked! They moved forward to adopt their own location in their community: Crystal Pier. Their first cleanup through the program made a lasting impression: They collected over 100 cigarette butts in the first 30 minutes of their cleanup! They decided to sign up for one of October's public cleanups, Trash or Treat, to focus on cigarette litter in another neighborhood of San Diego. The club takes pride in their dedicated members and feels a strong connection to San Diego. The club received a presentation from Moriah Saldaña, our Community Program Manager, who inspired the group with topics ranging from marine debris to recycling, and even the awesome data collection app, CleanSwell! The Pacific Beach Rotaract Club will continue to volunteer at ILACSD's hosted events, our independent programs and our zero waste community workshops because, "as a San Diego based club, it is important to us to actively serve and enhance the environment we live in. We love a clean San Diego too."

Thank you Pacific Beach Rotaract Club for all your work and efforts to keep our local communities cleaner and a happier place!

Donor Spotlight

Through support from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, ILACSD was able to enhance our education programs and create a more interactive classroom experience. They helped provide much needed technological upgrades to work with students, such as iPads and iClick technology. They also help fund our zero waste workshops, allowing more San Diegans to learn about zero waste and obtain resources to pursue a zero waste lifestyle.

Education Spotlight

Caprellid (copy)

Thanks to support from SDG&E, ILACSD educators visit Environmental Science and Marine Science classes throughout San Diego County to teach about the negative impacts of ocean acidification. Caused by increased carbon emissions, ocean acidification makes it very difficult for certain organisms, such as corals, oysters, and even plankton, to both build and maintain their shells. During the presentation, students use microscopes to see live plankton specimens first-hand. This microscopic caprellid, found in Mission Bay, is just one of the many organisms that could be impacted by ocean acidification. Students learn what they can do in their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint, such as carry a reusable water bottle, drive an electric vehicle and compost food scraps.
