Coastal Cleanup Day

Saturday, September 16, 2017

9 am - noon

Join us as we clean up and beautify 100+ beaches, canyons & neighborhoods. Last year,  7,550 volunteers came out to our 114 coastal and inland sites and successfully removed 185,000 pounds of litter in just 3 hours! Volunteers also helped build trails, plant new native landscape and remove graffiti. Join us this year and be a part of this international event!

Registration opens on August 8th! For more information and registration, head over to CleanupDay.org

When you register, pledge to Bring Your Own bucket, work gloves, a reusable water bottle, or all three! When you choose reusables, you help cut down on the number of disposable items used for the event!

Each volunteer will need to sign a waiver form and volunteers under the age of 18 will need a parent/guardian signature. Visit CleanupDay.org for more details!

We hope to see you there!

National Charity League Poway Chapter

This month, for our volunteer spotlight, we are highlighting an inspiring group of women from the Poway Chapter of the National Charity League! The NCL is a philanthropic organization that fosters mother-daughter relationships through a commitment to service, leadership development, and cultural experiences.

Some of the members from this organization first started volunteering with ILACSD through our storm drain stenciling program and have continued on ever since! They have chosen ILACSD as one of their focus philanthropies, and we couldn’t be more excited and grateful to have such wonderful mothers and daughters volunteer with us!

Members from this group recently came out and helped ILACSD assemble large trash and recycling bins for the busy 4th of July weekend! Leslie Bell says, “The world is a village and it takes all of us to make it work!” Thanks to their volunteerism, our local beaches where able to have extra trash and recycling bins during this past 4th of July weekend.

The NCL and their Poway Chapter are extremely motivated to give back to the San Diego community and we are thankful for their volunteerism with ILACSD and doing their part in creating a litter free San Diego!

Water Authority Partnership Will Save Millions of Gallons of Water at Balboa Park

New upgrades at Balboa Park will save millions of gallons of water a year and trim energy consumption thanks to a collaboration between Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, the San Diego County Water Authority and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).

The partners funded the installation of 365 high-efficiency water fixtures, like toilets, urinals and flow-control devices and faucets, to restrooms and kitchens in nine historic Park buildings that are home to 13 cultural organizations.

Most of the water savings will be achieved in restrooms where water use will be cut by more than half. Energy savings will result from avoiding the need to collect, transport and treat the conserved water.

Through its Live WaterSmart campaign, the Water Authority offers residents and business numerous classes, rebates and other resources to make more positive and permanent lifestyle changes that promote water-use efficiency. Learn more at WaterSmartSD.org.

Make Your Own Beeswax Wraps and Much More with WasteFreeSD's Resources Page

Have you checked out the redesigned WasteFreeSD.org? Not only can you search for donation and recycling options for common household items on the Home Page, users can also explore the Resources Page and find information on how to reduce waste at home through recycling tips, DIY articles, and zero waste guides.

The Resources Page houses information for users to find clear answers for questions that might not be answered through the search process. It also serves as a guide for San Diegans to instill zero waste practices in their everyday life. This month we want to highlight a staff favorite – how to make your very own beeswax cling wrap. This easy DIY project will help you eliminate the use of aluminum foil or plastic wrap typically used to cover leftovers. Learn how to make your own reusable and washable beeswax cling wrap using a few ingredients just in time for Labor Day weekend!

Visit WasteFreeSD.org every month to find new resources to help with all your zero waste efforts!
