Storm Drain Stenciling Day | March 31

Explaining why she wanted to get involved with the Storm Drain Stenciling program, Jen, a transplant from New York said,  "When I moved to San Diego, I had no idea that the storm drains go directly to the ocean until someone told me. By stenciling storm drains, I can make a difference by informing someone who just honestly doesn't know!" Because storm drains feed directly into our creeks, bays, lagoons, and ocean without being treated, every piece of litter, cigarette butt, or other pollutants become increasingly harmful. But there's something you can do! Join us for Storm Drain Stenciling Day and help stencil a pollution prevention message above storm drains around the Pacific Beach Recreation Center. Sign up now and help educate the public that only rain belongs in the storm drains!

California Food Waste Prevention Week
March 5-9, 2018 | #SaveTheFoodCA

According to the CalRecycle, Californians throw away nearly 12 billion lbs. of food per year. This wastes precious land, water, energy, and human resources and contributes almost 18% of the waste ending up in landfills.

It is time for San Diegans to take action! Reducing food waste in your home, workplace and community requires some thinking and planning. As a way to raise awareness, during Food Waste Prevention Week, ILACSD is asking San Diegans to participate in the Food Waste Reduction Hero Photo Challenge. Between Feb. 26 – March 16, share pictures of potentially wasted food in your workspace or home. Post your photo on social media using the hashtag #SaveTheFoodCA and tag @SaveTheFood on Twitter or @SaveTheFoodcom on Facebook!

Help ILACSD Get Ready for the Big Day!
Join the Packing Parties for Creek to Bay

Our 16th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup is fast approaching on April 21st! At last year’s event, 6,588 volunteers removed over 194,169 lbs. of litter from over 112 sites throughout the county!

With an event of that size, we have to start prepping and packing very early! We are looking for volunteers to assist us with prepping for the 2018 Creek to Bay Cleanup at our Packing Parties. At the Packing Parties, we will be assembling boxes of supplies for our numerous cleanup sites. With your help, we can make this year’s Creek to Bay an even bigger success than the last!

Whether you sign up for a full day or just a few hours, we would love your help! Community service hours will be provided for any volunteers that need them. To sign up, please email our Community Programs Coordinator, Carly Keen, at ckeen@cleansd.org with your availability!

Volunteer Spotlight:
Team TechKnow-Logic

Team TechKnow-Logic is an inspiring group of students that is taking another look at storm drains in the City of San Diego. This group of volunteers from Meadowbrook Middle School participated in the FIRST Lego League competition, where they came up with a solution for a problem that has to do with hydrodynamics. The problem they chose to tackle was storm drain pollution, which led them to participating in our Storm Drain Stenciling program. Over one weekend, these dedicated volunteers painted 17 storm drains with a pollution prevention message! These middle schoolers realized that, even though they are man-made, storm drains are a HUGE part of our environment, and that because these drains are not filtered in any way, all debris or pollution that enters them leads to and harms the ocean. Not only did they stencil an impressive amount of drains, but they also created a tool that prevents debris from entering the storm drains from the get-go: Drain Saver. This savvy group has a bright future – thank you for increasing awareness and protecting our environment!

Donor Spotlight:
Universal Waste Disposal Company

With Global Recycling Day coming up on March 18th, for this month's donor spotlight we wanted to feature our friends over at Universal Waste Disposal Company (UWDC)! As a leader in lamp, battery and electronics recycling in California, UWDC is dedicated to the environmentally safe, socially responsible, and compliant handling of potentially hazardous waste. Through proper recycling, UWDC helps keep potentially hazardous materials from being disposed of incorrectly and harming San Diego's local environment.

UWDC understands that one of the biggest barriers to recycling is education. Without knowledge of what should be recycled, hazardous items can often times end up in landfills or illegally dumped in canyons. To combat this, UWDC teamed up with ILACSD for a series of blogs to make information available about some tricky items to recycle! Keep an eye out for the next blog focusing on proper handling and recycling of lithium ion batteries!
