Doing Well, Doing Good

So much to be thankful for... how about starting with living here… and pursuing our outdoor passions in what many people would consider paradise! Or for all of our amazing (and often eclectic) friends, associates, even competitors. Or those awesome sunrises that the dawn patrol surfers see, or 12 hours later, those amazing December sunsets we all see. Thankful, indeed, to work with the inspirational and selfless Bill and Lori Walton. Thankful to see new companies and jobs and a healthier economy in general. Or very thankful that organizations like the Kilkenny’s Lucky Duck Foundation have stood tall and tried to address the human catastrophe called “homelessness.” Doing Good for others counts the most and I think it's a timely point in the Calendar to remind ourselves that our successes are diminished by the sad experiences of the less fortunate in San Diego. I hope next year at this time I can report to you that I am thankful for trying harder to help those in need!

Building Trust Through Transparency
Heather Molina of Red Door Interactive gives a great primer on the hyper-relevant issue of getting your consumers to trust your brand. In an electronic-world inundated with fake news, kickstarter purchases that never come to fruition, and fly-by-night social media advertisers promoting items too good to be true; it is important to make sure that brand messaging is focused on being trustworthy – especially new brands. “As we go full force into 2019, brand trust undoubtedly remains an ever-growing part of the conversation, as brands need to capture and (re)gain consumer trust” Read Heather’s full blog post here.

Surftech Introduces Fusion Injection Technology Surfboards
Surftech continues to live up to its name with this newly patented precision engineered torsion control system designed to optimize surfboard performance. I’ll stop pretending like I know what I’m talking about and quote their website, “Injection-Tech utilizes the pressures and forces from the surfer and the wave itself, called elastic energy. By strategically engineering the position of the reinforcing material on the bottom of the board, we create less resistance to torsional (twisting) flex, allowing the board to flow through turns with a more enhanced turning arch.” And if a picture is worth a thousand words, animated gif’s must be worth more so head on over to the product page for a visual explanation and to see what boards are available with this tech today.

Prime Hall Talks Under Water Torpedo League with Ozy
SDSI Accelerator company, Under Water Torpedo League, and its founder, Prime Hall, spoke with the editor of ozy.com to give insight into this exciting sport. This article does a great job of breaking down the rules/objectives as well as gives a nice testimonial from MMA fighter Ilima-Lei Macfarlane... She says, “controlling your breathing underwater, whether it’s during a game or training by carrying dumbbells across the pool bottom, is a whole other level of fortitude. Plus it’s so quiet and well, it’s just … fun.” Read the full article.

Jared Koett Developing Sustainable Pill Bottle
Jared Koett of Bast Surf is taking his eco-friendly paper product expertise to a new market: Pill Bottles. Koett’s bottles are not only eco-friendly, but they save money in the form of storage due to his bottles nesting/stacking inside one another. “We’ve created an alternative to the traditional pill bottle using paper,” said Koett. “The Invert pill bottle is built to perform, yet can reduce single-use plastic and boost a company's bottom-line through warehousing efficiency and brand appeal.” Read the full article.

Cyclists, Encinitans!
As you may know, 12 days ago Roberta Walker, a very well-known Leucadian, was struck and critically injured while cycling on PCH in Leucadia. While praying for her recovery is step one, the event has actually proved to be the catalyst in urging the Encinitas Town Council to take action immediately to make cycling and walking in our town safe for all. The time for delay is over. You can do two things: 1) call the Sheriff’s substation and ask for speed enforcement on the Leucadia segment of PCH…and 2) attend the January 9 town Council meeting and join us in urging our leaders to streamline the bureaucracy and make the streetscape happen asap. TurningPoint Exec How do the hirers get hired? For many entrepreneurs, the decision to transition from employee to boss/business owner was simple. During the years spent working for someone else, many executives discovered ways they could “do it better,” if only they were the ones in charge. They are willing to take the risk and leave the comfort and security of working for someone else to strike out on their own.
For some, though, the freedom to make decisions and implement ideas is liberating. But it’s the everyday tasks associated with running a business, from payroll to facilities, often casts a shadow over the entrepreneurial spirit that drove them to strike out on their own in the first place. Business owners find themselves spending little to no time doing what they enjoy most- developing and implementing innovative ideas. In some cases, the benefits of running a business outweigh the frustrations, allowing the entrepreneur to spend many years running her business with full engagement. For others, the negatives slowly but surely dilute the owner’s engagement, eventually leading to a sale. In either case, many entrepreneurs eventually find themselves facing a second transition, after selling their business: from entrepreneur back to executive.
