Chamber Newsletter Headline 2017
July 5, 2019

What is the value of great service?  I’m often asked what new and exciting businesses are coming to town.  Some people dream of large retail stores while others fantasize about their favorite restaurant.  Most people, however, don’t ask about financial planners, insurance agents, realtors, CPAs, massage therapists, specialty health care providers, or other service-oriented businesses.  While this latter group doesn’t get as much attention as a nationally recognized chain store, these service-oriented businesses are the lifeblood of our local economy and do so much for the community!

Please join us for our first-ever small business expo which will feature roughly 50 service businesses.  This structured networking opportunity will enable our great businesses to connect with fellow members of our Chamber, and we hope you’ll join us.

Best Regards,

Ryan Starks

Business of the Month: Mountainland Auto Sales

Sometimes things just get in your blood and are passed down from generation to generation. Most of the time it’s a trait such as hair color, or a smile, or even a quirky laugh. Sometimes the thing that gets passed down is passion, integrity, and doing good for others. Though they aren’t physical traits they can nevertheless be passed down and taught from one generation to another. Shane Clegg, owner of Mountainland Auto Sales in Heber City, has inherited many traits from his family, but the one that drives him today is his passion for cars.

Clegg says his roots in the automotive industry go way back even before he was born. Starting in the 1940s and 1950s his family began working in the industry with repair shops and small dealerships. Growing up in his grandfather’s shadow, Clegg learned a lot about the industry and even more about integrity and doing what’s right.

“My grandpa was the founder of all the car related businesses in our family,” said Clegg. “Any body that new him looked at him with a very high regard. He always had a lot of integrity and cared for people.”

BUSINESS ADVICE: Mastering Networking

expeditionHR.jpgDo you dread walking up to total strangers and introducing yourself at networking events? I challenge you to shift the way you think about networking.  Trying looking at it simply as an opportunity to connect - with no expectation other than to simply get to know a couple things about a couple people.  That’s it!

It’s similar to working a muscle – it’s hard and uncomfortable the first couple of times, but gets stronger the more you exercise.  To set yourself up for success, think about 1-2 simple conversation starters before you arrive and your response when asked about yourself.

Some conversation starters you can try: “What keeps you busy during the day?” or “What was the best thing that happened for you this month?” Some will respond with work-related answers and others may share something personal – both will create a connection.  Focus on 1-2 key things which differentiate you in your work when asked what you do.  Why try this?  It’s simple - genuine connections often organically become business opportunities.  Good luck!
