Recycle Your Motor Oil & Tires This Month

Did you know it only takes one drop of motor oil to contaminate an entire swimming pool worth of water? Also, it's not uncommon to find 100 tires at some of our cleanups throughout San Diego County. Both tires and motor oil negatively impact our environment and distract from its natural beauty. Luckily both of these items can be recycled, ensuring that neither contaminates our land or pollutes our local waterways. During the month of March, I Love A Clean San Diego and the County of San Diego will be hosting an Oil Filter Exchange Event at participating O’Reilly Auto Parts and various Tire Recycling Events in East County.

Visit and search “Tires” or “Motor Oil – Filters” to find more information about the events.”

Volunteer Spotlight

This month we're highlighting an amazing family for our volunteer spotlight! Originally from the Northern VA/DC area, Paige Edson, Niko, Reno, Cayenne, and their dog Cola are traveling around the country and making a difference by volunteering everywhere along their journey. Through The Giving Tour, they want to learn about other cultures, appreciate different ways of life, and give back to the communities by getting involved.

During their stay in San Diego, they volunteered at our February Cupid’s Cleanup at Bay City Brewing Co. They learned about the harmful effects our trash has on the community and the ocean. As a small token of appreciation for their hard work, we gave them a Make A Wave coin, a special coin given to us by previous volunteers. This special coin is a way to “pay it forward” and perform acts of kindness and generosity with a much bigger purpose.

The Giving Tour truly embodies their personal mission of appreciation and love for all things, and we are grateful to have met them at our cleanup! Thank you for all your hard work!

All About Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles are the way of the future. They’re more efficient, better for the environment, and give their owners some great perks. According to the EPA, the transportation industry accounts for 26% of greenhouse gas emissions in the US, with 61% of those emissions coming from light-duty vehicles. By choosing an electric vehicle, you help reduce your carbon footprint and support positive change for the transportation industry.

Donor Spotlight

Tsunami Cleanup Jan

In February, I Love A Clean San Diego was selected for a generous grant from the UPS Foundation to support the work we do to preserve and protect San Diego’s beaches, parks, waterways, canyons, and other natural spaces. We thank the UPS Foundation for their commitment to social responsibility and volunteerism. We are so pleased to partner with them and appreciate all they do for our community.

Zero Waste Tip

Join the journey to zero waste by managing the food waste you create in your home. In San Diego, almost 40% of our landfill is comprised of organic materials like food waste. To start, freeze items before they rot. Freezer-friendly items include bread (slice it first!), berries, cooked rice, meat, herbs, fresh ginger, chopped onions, and soup stock. Pro Tip: remove herbs from their stem, and then freeze in ice cube trays with water or cooking oil – you’ll be ready to make flavorful meals even when herbs are out of season.

Learn more food waste tips at this Saturday's free workshop!
