Don't Miss Out: Pacific Beach Community Cleanup!

Come join ILACSD and Councilmember Lorie Zapf for the Pacific Beach Community Cleanup on Saturday, November 12th from 8:00am-11:00am! We will be partnering with Urban Corps and Discover PB on projects throughout the neighborhood including mulching, grafitti removal, and litter pick up. Volunteers will meet at the Pacific Beach Taylor Library at 8:00am.

This will be a family friendly event and fun for all ages! If you have any reusable items- like a water bottle, work gloves, or bucket- you are encouraged to bring them to the cleanup to reduce the amount of waste we create from our events. Each volunteer will need a waiver form and any participants under the age of 18 will need a parent/guardian signature.

Zero Waste Workshops

Our free zero waste workshops have migrated south for the winter! Join us at the South Chula Vista Library from 1-3 pm on Saturday, December 3rd to learn more about how you can adopt a zero waste lifestyle, including how to travel with a smaller waste footprint. Participate in the Swap ‘n Shop by bringing any gently used items to exchange for another’s goods, create repurposed succulent boxes, and be sure to stick around for an opportunity drawing for great prizes.

Volunteer Spotlight

This month we are spotlighting our dedicated group of volunteers from the USNS MERCY/ NWCA #167!

Ana Young Huasco and her team have been volunteering with ILACSD since late last year. Their first event at the Tijuana River Valley Cleanup was in August 2015. Since then, they’ve continued participating in hosted cleanup events throughout 2016. They especially love our beach cleanups and always bring a sense of excitement and gratitude with them to the cleanup site. No matter how big or small their volunteer group is, they are proud to represent USNS MERCY/ NWCA #167 every time.

We love the continued dedication this team has shown throughout their year of volunteering, and we thank them for spending their time motivating others! Keep up the amazing work USNS MERCY/ NWCA #167!

Thank you, Republic Services!

republic news

This month, we are sending a huge thank you to Republic Services! Without their help hauling away the debris volunteers pick up, our cleanups would not be possible.  Republic Services has hauled 294,985 pounds of debris and recycling from our recent cleanups.

Education Spotlight

Why is it so important to have green spaces in our urban communities? They improve human health conditions, reduce flooding and storm water runoff, improve air quality, and more. Not to mention, they provide a great opportunity for students in urban communities to connect with nature. Recently, third grade students from High Tech Elementary Point Loma explored nature in their local urban green space  during a Nearby Nature hike. While exploring, they saw stingrays, examined plankton, and smelled wild rosemary. By engaging our upcoming generations in the natural world, we’re ensuring the preservation of green space for years to come. To support programs like Nearby Nature, consider making a contribution to ILACSD’s educational programs.
