Adult-Child Well Being

I Matter Framework Training

Helping adults to help children

I Matter Digest #15- April 2019

Dear Firstname_Placeholder,

Happy New Year-ish and Happy Easter-ish! It's been a while but we’ve been working hard. We’ve got solid foundations in place, have very supportive community networks with many strands and we are looking forward to talking and sharing with you a bit more frequently as we keep moving forward on this learning journey.

Did you see the David Attenborough film this last week wth the urgency for us to think differently about how we go forward on this beautiful planet?  The messages I took away were I Matter messages.  The planet needs us to think individually about our own role right now.  What will this look like as we go forward I wonder?  Certainly some new thinking is needed and we are going to need to get better at relationships and at supporting relationship skills - in schools, and communities and across nations.

So, firstly, going forward this is going to be a newsletter with a focus mainly on professional training - including for professionals who are also parents.  Why?  Because there is an important need to revisit our collective professional ideas about evidence based practice for children and young people.   I am aware that this focus may sometimes be frustrating to parents who are not professionals who would like to take part sooner rather than later.  However, for now we have decided that focussing on professional training is the best way to increase availability of I Matter training for more parents and carers in the longer run.  So as a team we hope you will be patient with the process.  However stay tuned as we are working on more access for parents!

Secondly we wil be sending this newsletter more regularly.  There will be regular items and links to dates, some of the content will run for a couple of times but always there will be something new!   We hope you will find it informative and engaging.

Thirdly, and before we go any further,we’d like to remind you why what we do is important…and therefore why we want to ask you to support us as we move into a new phase.  Children's wellbeing improves as relationships with key adults and others improve.   So you can help by sharing this newsletter. telling people about our courses and supporting us with our bursary fundraising scheme which going forward will run alongside all of our work as a termly appeal process.

We are becoming skilled at helping small amounts go a long way!  :)

JOURNEYS OUT OF THE FOG:

Journey's is what we like to support and here are some comments that we think illustrate why we love to do what we do

+ As a result of I Matter Training I understood what had happened in my relationship with my own son many many years ago and as a result we talked - for the first time in so long (Experienced teacher and parent)

+ I am no longer overwhelmed by the complex children I work with.  I  now love my job and relationships at home have really improved so much too (Teaching assistant and parent)

+ This course gave me answers to questions that I have been looking for, for over 30 years.   It offers a brilliant practical approach for anyone looking to improve their own interpersonal  relationships, especially with their own family/children, or to help families in need/crises to improve their relationships (GP and parent)

SOME QUESTIONS FOR THIS TERM - PLEASE LET US KNOW WHAT YOU THINK:

1. What are the key barriers to more developmental understanding in schools?

2. What would be needed for a shift in attitudes to parent education and support?

3. What is it that contributes best to the feeling of a supportive community?

Any ideas please send us your thoughts!    We are still learning to use our social media accounts so some discussion would be great!

RECENT EVENTS

+ a fantastic conference about ACES in Morecambe bringing together a wide cross-section of professionals. Looking forward we’re planning to be part of a follow up discussion led by local GP, Andy Knox about the shape of what we really want from our future health, economic, social and political systems.

+ a recent celebration of Integrated Care Communities's across Morecambe Bay that show cased the positive energy that is released when people feel empowered to make a difference.  It is wonderful to be part of this all age thinking and process.

HELP US HELP OTHERS TO ACCESS THIS TRAINING:

One of the biggest challenges in delivering education and support for professionals and parents-carers who work and live with children who are struggling is the question of who is responsible for paying?   We have learned therefore that we have to progress our own plans and projects with a mixed funding approach.  Our focus on fund raising will give you some insight into the steps we are taking as we build our confidence

We have been discussing a celidah for a long time now - and our plans are finally progressing - more information coming soon!

PLEASE MAKE A CONTRIBUTION : WE FUND RAISE THIS TERM FOR NEXT TERMS WORK

THIS IS ONE WAY TO SUPPORT A COMMUNITY BUILDING APPROACH

To make it possible for schools and parents to access training without money being the barrier we are planning to fund raise for a target each term with a focus on the following four elements - perhaps you would like to help us with one of them?

+ You can become a Friend of the I Matter Framework - an annual small subscription

+ You can donate to our bursary fund for lower income parents-carers who ask for help

+ You can donate to our fund for bursaries for smaller schools who want to take part

+ You can donate to our core costs so we can put our energy into reaching further

We promise you that every penny is spent carefully towards our primary goal of happier healthier adult-child relationships and more developmentally sensitive provision.

HOUSE KEEPING - DO YOU WANT TO BE ON THIS LIST?

We really don't want to send you emails that you don't want

+ we plan to send this newsletter out more regularly now. if you want to join our open linked in group let us know

+ if you want to keep receiving our emails you must open them - even quickly!  To avoid us getting stuck in spam you may need to whitelist us.

+ if you don't open our emails we will remove you from our list as we want to work with people who want to hear us.

+ If you don't want to hear from us anymore - and we do know how it is - please unsubscribe (we will only weep for a little while!)

Just in case you are not sure:  The I Matter Framework is a carefully researched practical and back to basics integration of an extensive research literature relevant to the emotional wellbeing of children and families.   The intention has been to respond to the widespread concern about gaps in services fo children through providing a course that can help professionals and parents and young people talk together more easily about challenging times - and improve adult-child relationship health - based on a clear integrated evidence base.
