By Scott Ashton, CEO Oceanside Chamber of Commerce In 2021, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 125th anniversary of serving the Oceanside business community. Founded in 1896, the Chamber is Oceanside’s oldest, an arguably best-known, business. While it was fun to look back at what the organization has accomplished in more than a century’s worth of work, our staff and Board of Directors spent much more time looking forward to what is next. Most significantly, we embarked on the development of an ambitious 5-Year Strategic Plan. The process involved extensive outreach to the business community including phone surveys and focus group meetings with business and community leaders. Using the feedback received from its outreach efforts, the Chamber Board held sessions with a strategic facilitator to help update its mission and vision (remove capital) statements and identify key areas in which the Chamber will serve the business community in the next five years. The following new vision and mission statements will serve as a compass to help us stay on track to serve our community… Vision: A Thriving and United Oceanside Mission: To Provide Advocacy and Resources that Help Businesses and Our Community Thrive The following is an overview of the Chamber’s 5-Year Strategic Imperatives and the key areas in which the organization will focus its energy and resources. Advocate for Business-Friendly Policies and Program Chamber members clearly identified “advocacy” as one of the most important functions of the Chamber. The Chamber will continue to take the lead in ensuring that our business continued on page 24

MADE IN OCEANSIDE Olli Salumeria, LLC. If you ever wanted to know how the sausage is made, look no further than Olli Salumeria Americana LLC. Olli Salumeria, a Chamber member, is a company dedicated to producing salami with modern methods honoring Italian tradition, right in Oceanside’s backyard. That is what his company does and who they are, says the company’s founder and president, Oliviero Colmignoli. Olli was born and raised in Rome into a family of salumi, or salami makers. As a boy, Olli spent plenty of time at his grandfather’s prosciutto and salami factories, and by an early age he picked up a lot of knowledge about how to cure various meats. He assisted his family with their salami-making business in Richmond, Virginia as a young man in the 1980’s. “You could not import meats to America at that time,” Olli says. In 2000, Olli joined his grandfather’s company and started learning the traditional techniques of creating an everlasting salami filled with history, tradition, patience, and quality. He launched his own salamimaking venture in Virginia in 2010 and then settled right here in Oceanside in 2015, expanding his company into a much larger facility. The quality of Olli Salumeria salami is directly affected by three main factors; meat, ingredients, and method of production, which they have perfected over the years. He incorporates into his meat mix more than four generations of artisanal, slow-cured history based on old family recipes and continues to sustain the process that has proved to provide a flavorful, healthy, and clean salami. Olli says it just takes simple ingredients and time. “Our salami making takes a unique and old-world approach to all three of these factors. In doing so, we have created a product that we believe in and has a tangible difference from more traditional salami found in America,” Olli says.

With Olli Salumeria, the company aims to create an experience that recreates what a person would eat in Italy. This experience is a fresh-tasting salami that is sweeter with a less acidic taste, Olli says. “We do a method that has been used for thousands of years, but we can tweak it for the safety of the consumers,” he adds. “We don’t take short cuts.” The salami’s casing is covered in a powdery dusting of benign white mold, which is removed before eating. This is a “good” type of mold, which helps cure the salami and fend off bad bacteria. The pork is ground and then cooked at a very high temperature which makes it easier to dry and is less acidic. They also ferment it and keep a higher Ph, which makes a difference in the quality and flavor. It’s a salami that had time to develop its complex meat flavor through a slow-cure, gluten-free production cycle, flavored with spices and culture. The factory produces salami in many shapes and sizes. Their products include Olli snacks, 6-ounce chubs, antipasto, pre-sliced, and 5-pound bulk sausage. Whether you are in the mood for something spicy like chipotle or subtle like a genoa or even something more unusual like a black truffle infused Tartufo, Olli doesn’t disappoint his home or business customers. Other savory salami varieties available for wholesale or retail: Genoa: Genoa salami is simply seasoned with just salt and white pepper, allowing the flavor of their premium pork to shine. Sopressata: Sopressata is a robust salami flavored with whole black peppercorn and garlic. Napoli: Napoli salami is smoked over applewood giving it a complex, hearty flavor. Toscano: Toscano salami is seasoned with fennel pollen conveying a slight, licorice-like aroma. Calabrese: Their spicy calabrese is seasoned with cayenne pepper and paprika,

quality of our meats and other foods,” Olli says. He also has invested in his people to develop and train them for success in his business, treating them like family. “As we grow, we want to see our employees grow, too,” he adds.

Pepperoni: Pepperoni is Olli’s classically American salami. Hot Sopressata: This is a spicy salami seasoned with garlic, red pepper, black pepper, paprika and red wine. What sets Olli apart from other salami makers is his respect for animal husbandry, sustainable farming methods, ensuring the hogs are vegetarians, and that there are no antibiotics or nitrates, or nitrites added. The salami is made from high-quality pork that comes from pasture-raised pigs raised on family farms. The color of the meat is a deeper mahogany color as compared to the more pinkish colored pork in which you may be familiar. “Yes, it costs more to run a business this way,” Olli says, “but we get a better meat out of them.” Because of OIli’s product quality, he was able to get his product into Whole Foods nationally within just 9 months of being in business. However, Olli says the first two years of business were difficult. “2015 and 2016 were hard. We had new costs, new overhead, new labor force. It was hard, but we persevered. In 2017, things started to change, and we started growing,” he says. His advice to other entrepreneurs is: “Don’t be scared at the first setback, but keep going.” You can now find his delicacies behind the deli counter and as local restaurant fare. When the company propelled into the snacking category in 2017, making salami, cheese and cracker packs for grocery stores and Allegiant Air, that was a game changer. Their charcuterie boards help their home consumers make entertainment easier with a pack of his own salami, imported Greek olives, and cheese. They are launching a new product line this month. Now, he has invested in modern technology such as robotic machines to move the salami from one section of his factory to another as part of the curing process. “The reason we invested so much on automation is so we can spend our money on the technology and www.oceansidechamber.com | Winter 2022

Recently, The Student Opportunities for Career Awareness and Learning, or SOCAL, a joint project of the San Diego North Economic Development Council and the Carlsbad, Vista and Oceanside chambers of commerce, spent the morning with Olli and his staff Claudia Torres from human resources, Food Quality Control Director, Garrett Walsh and Raw Food Manager Nicole Angel to create a secondary school career exploration video that highlighted the company. The project, funded by a grant from Supervisor Jim Desmond, aims to inform students and those in career transition of unfamiliar professions and what educational path they might take close to home. Olli believes in encouraging youth to follow their professional dreams and believes in training new and current staff in his family’s traditional and modern salami-making methods. “We don’t expect people we hire to have the experience, and we can train them. We just want them to love the work as much as we do,” Olli says. Olli also prides itself in being “American made.” His meat, spices, raw ingredients and packaging are all made locally. Even the Olli Salumeria product labels are made right here in Oceanside with a local business. “We are made in the U.S., but with Italian style.” The company’s packaging isn’t hand-wrapped, but therein lies the secret to the taste and texture of their salami, Olli says. “Our equipment seals each salami inside the airtight translucent film that keeps the salami fresh – in the store and at home. It keeps the salami from slowly drying out and getting hard and unpleasant to eat while it’s in a store waiting to be purchased. OK, packaging secrets may be divulged, but don’t ask Olli to share his family recipes for his salumi. The recipe may be kept secret, but the intention of his products is not. “We are a family business that creates good food and convenience without sacrificing quality,” Olli says. “My family is not just selling salami— We are selling an experience. STUDIO ACE Studio ACE is an arts education nonprofit organization with a mission to enrich lives through Arts, Community, and Education. They opened their first physical studio space in June 2018, and proudly celebrated the opening of an additional 1000 square feet of classroom space in September 2021, allowing them to bring even more arts education opportunities to the Oceanside community. Each and every employee showed incredible determination and tenacity during the past 18 months, dedicating long hours in an unknown situation to care for the children of essential workers. They are now on a mission to make this already incredible childcare center better than ever! The Oceanside Children’s Paradise is an incredible pillar in the community of Oceanside and we recognize them for this.

Lina Borja, Director, Priscilla Badmilk, Assistant Director “Teamwork makes the dream work,” is often heard at all five Children’s Paradise locations. Mrs. Lina and Mrs. Priscilla are shining examples of this. Together, they serve more than 200 children and their families and manage almost 40 staff members who make this childcare center one of the best in North County. When most other schools closed for COVID-19, their Oceanside site stayed open to care for the children of essential workers without even hesitating. They are always ready for a challenge and remain positive even if things are hard. They’ve learned each other’s strengths and use this knowledge to work with children of all ages and abilities, staff, and parents.

Marietess (Mary) Sevilla Lead Teacher for Toddlers Two-year-old toddlers’ early development skills skyrocket in Oceanside as they interact with their lead teacher, Mrs. Mary. She’s best known for her language-rich environment and keeping her classroom routine solid. When it’s time for snacks and lunch, toddlers engage in a family-style dining experience and engage in every step including setting it up and cleaning. During meals, Mrs. Mary talks with the children about what they are eating, where it comes from, the shape, taste and colors, all of which stimulates language skills. Outside the classroom, she’s constantly engaged with her class while teaching them to appreciate nature. You can find Mrs. Mary and her little students of life looking for bugs and catching lizards and butterflies.

Mrs. Becca, the lead teacher, combined with Ms. Sierra and Mr. Daniel’s willingness to learn new things, has also made this team stay vigilant with paperwork and childcare requirements every day.

She provides a clean, loving and nurturing environment every moment of the day to keep infants calm and happy at Children’s Paradise, Oceanside. She also has a special gift with infants who have been diagnosed with developmental disabilities. Currently, Ms. Marcella and her team are working with a set of twins to help build their muscles with floor time play and assisted stretching. She also spends extra time patiently feeding them and ensuring their growth.

125th wrap up The Oceanside Chamber held its annual Meet the City Reception on September 30, 2021. This event gives Oceanside Chamber members and guests the opportunity to connect with local elected officials, City of Oceanside staff members, along with other businesses and community leaders. The event was held at the new El Corazon Aquatic Event Center and patio. Also, that evening, the Oceanside Chamber celebrated its 125th anniversary. Established in 1896, the Oceanside Chamber is the oldest business in Oceanside. Over its long history, its role as a business and community advocate continues to be an important one. Since its inception, the Chamber has helped to shape the development of our City.

Their labels claim they can help improve your health and well-being. But are dietary supplements necessary for your health? It depends. Supplements contain nutrients but they cannot treat or cure disease. Some can be beneficial to your health and for managing some health conditions. says Immanuel Hausig, DO, a family medicine physician at Scripps Coastal Medical Center Carlsbad. “Learn how safe and effective they are first.” The supplement industry is a $40 billion industry and growing. There are thousands of dietary supplements available on store shelves ready for purchase without a prescription. “Which is why you want to be cautious,” says Dr. Hausig. With so many choices, it’s important to know how to read product labels and claims before buying. And if you want to read beyond the label, it’s important to know where to get reliable information. “You can check with your health care provider,” Dr. Hausig says. “Your doctor can tell you what conditions supplements can help with and which ones, if any, are right for you.”

Here are six facts about supplements to consider before taking them:

1. DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT REGULATED LIKE DRUGS The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates dietary supplements. But it does not regulate them as drugs that can be used to treat or cure a disease. They are regulated as foods, but not conventional foods. The FDA does not approve safety or effectiveness of dietary supplements before they go to market. It leaves that up to the makers of the supplements. The FDA can remove any supplement product from the market if it’s found not to be safe. It can also take action if claims on the products are false or misleading.

2. DIETARY SUPPLEMENT MAKERS CAN MAKE LIMITED HEALTH CLAIMS Supplement makers by law cannot claim their product treats or cures a disease or health condition. Only an FDA-approved drug can make such a claim. However, they can make health claims on how a nutrient or ingredient can help reduce the risk of a disease or health condition. They can claim, for example: • Getting enough calcium as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle can reduce the risk of osteoporosis • Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils might help some people with heart disease. There are two types of health claims that can be found on labels, qualified and authorized. Authorized claims have been reviewed by the FDA and have significant scientific agreement. Qualified claims have scientific evidence in support but not significant scientific agreement and must be accompanied by a disclaimer.

3. SUPPLEMENT MAKERS CAN MAKE CLAIMS ABOUT EFFECTS ON BODY STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION In addition to health claims, supplement makers can make structure-function claims. These are claims on how a nutrient or a dietary ingredient affects the structure or function of the human body. Supplement makers can say, for example: • Calcium builds strong bones • Fiber maintains bowel regularity • Antioxidants maintain cell integrity

4. SUPPLEMENTS CAN’T REPLACE A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET Supplements should not be a substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. Make sure you’re eating a variety of foods and that they are healthy foods. “If you’re thinking of taking a dietary supplement, ask yourself if you can get these nutrients from the foods you’re eating,” Dr. Hausig says. “Most of the time you www.oceansidechamber.com | Winter 2022

can. You can even find fortified foods that carry extra nutrients at your grocery store.” But not everybody eats as well as they should. In other cases, people have nutritional deficiencies for health or other reasons. Supplements can be used to fill in nutritional gaps in many instances. Folic acid, for example, decreases the risk of certain birth defects. Dr. Hausig cautions not to take more supplements than you need because of the risk of side effects. Taking too much vitamin A, for example, can cause headaches and liver damage, reduce bone strength and cause birth defects, according to the FDA.

5. SOME SUPPLEMENTS CAN INTERACT WITH MEDICATIONS OR AFFECT MEDICAL CONDITIONS Before taking supplements, read the label and check with your doctor to see how they might interact with any medication you might be taking and any potential side effects. Certain supplements may interact with certain medications and reduce their effectiveness. They may also increase the risk of side effects from those medications. According to the FDA: • Vitamin K can reduce the ability of a blood thinner to prevent blood from clotting • St. John’s wort can speed the breakdown of many drugs and reduce their effectiveness • Antioxidant supplements, like vitamins C and E, might reduce the effectiveness of some types of cancer chemotherapy

6. USE RELIABLE RESOURCES TO CHECK QUALITY OF SUPPLEMENTS In addition to your doctor, you can get reliable information about dietary supplements from some non-commercial sources. The US Office of Dietary Supplements is a resource for information about dietary supplements and their ingredients. The US Pharmacopeia (USP) maintains a dietary supplement verification program. The USP Verified Mark on a dietary supplement indicates that the product meets the following: • Contains ingredients listed in declared potency and amounts • Does not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants • Will break down and release into the body within specified amount of time • Were made according to Good Manufacturing Practices for dietary supplements. arts & culture From a “Cultural Desert” To A Thriving Arts Community by Maria Mingalone Executive Director, Oceanside Museum of Art

The City of Oceanside was going through redevelopment in the 1980s and 90s battling an image of notoriety. Some citizens remember Oceanside being described by the local media as a cultural desert. Hoping to make the downtown more attractive for residents and local business, city leadership challenged a group of citizens to create a cultural arts center as part of the area’s redevelopment. The idea was the brainchild of then three term mayor, Larry Bagley, who believed that the arts are an essential facet of civic life. Mayor Bagley proposed that “the residents desperately needed something for themselves.” Establishing the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) was a journey that started with Mayor Bagley gathering a handful of volunteers in the early 1990s. There have been many milestones to celebrate over the ensuing years. A myriad of programs and events took place before 1994 while the feasibility of a museum in Oceanside was being defined. The process of incorporating as a non-profit organization was completed in 1995. These, among many other accomplishments, were hard won and ably accomplished through volunteer effort by community and art lovers alike. What started as the dream of a handful of citizens, became the reality of an entire community. This coming year will be a landmark moment for OMA— twenty five years prior on October 6, 1997, OMA opened its first official exhibition in the newly renovated, historic Irving J. Gill building on Pier View Way. This touchstone year is a moment the community can galvanize around as OMA embarks on an exciting future.

That dream includes not only the museum, it embraces the entire arts community that was inspired by and continues to grow since those early years. The museum shares the distinction of being in the state designated Oceanside California Cultural District (OCCD) along with a host of cultural partners. Together we make up a vibrant arts community worth celebrating. With numerous assets including museums, theaters, galleries, and practicing artists, the district is an honor to the hard work these groups have put in over these several decades. The Society currently has two published histories available for purchase which provide an extensive history of Oceanside along with stunning historic photos. A third, limited edition history book will be released in early 2022 and will feature some never before published images and historical highlights of some of Oceanside’s oldest buildings, along with stories about residents who helped to shape and diversify our community. Its photo collection is one of the largest in San Diego County and spans over 125 years. The Society is always looking to expand and add photos to its extensive archives from long time residents. For over two decades the Oceanside Historical Society has conducted Downtown History Walks, which are offered the second Saturday of each month from April through September. workforce development Women’s Incubator Program Hatches Bright Ideas The Women Entrepreneur Incubator program, which launched in September on Zoom, graduated its first cohort of trained female veterans and military spouses to develop home-based businesses in one of two tracks: Social Media Management and Virtual Assistant companies. The event, held at the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 28th, featured a presentation by Joseph Molina, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Veterans Chamber of Commerce based in San Diego County, and one of the incubator sponsors. SCORE Mentors and the Oceanside Chamber also collaborated as sponsors of the free business incubator program. The three organizations provided training, technical assistance, mentorship, peer-topeer support, and financial information to each of the 40 participants. Free Course Offered at the Chamber’s Office The Oceanside Chamber’s workforce development program, InterFaith Ministries, and the U.S. Environment Protection Agency brought our businesses free professional development and continuing education training in November. Employees who work in the construction sector or other industries in which they might be exposed to lead earned a Certificate of Completion for “Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting” just for attending one of two, 8-hour courses offered at the Chamber’s office. The course concentrated on procedures for minimizing lead dust generation and soil contamination during maintenance, renovation, and remodeling activities as defined by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Chamber visited Olli Salumeria, a company dedicated to producing salami with modern methods honoring Italian tradition, right in Oceanside’s backyard. They interviewed the founder and president along with two of his employees, including Raw Food Manager, Nicole Angel.

The Chamber’s workforce development program hosted the training to keep employers and their employees safe. If these procedures are correctly implemented, the risk of lead exposure to employees, children, residents and families of employees can be minimized.

SOCAL Project Goes Global The Student Opportunities for Career Awareness and Learning, or SOCAL, is a joint project of the San Diego North Economic Development Council, Tri-City Medical Center and the Carlsbad, Vista and Oceanside Chambers of Commerce. The project originated over two years ago at Tri-City Medical Center (TCMC) as a way to advance its long-standing priority of strengthening North County’s Healthcare workforce pipeline. TCMC originated the concept of occupational videos on demand, the name, the logo and look of the SOCAL brand. Phase one of the project, funded by a grant from Supervisor Jim Desmond, aims to inform students and those in career transition of unfamiliar professions and what educational path they might take close to home. So far with the SOCAL project, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce has featured three member companies: Hydranautics, Olli Salumeria, and Genentech. WELCOME NEW BOARD AND STAFF Lauren Sweeton, General Manager – The Brick Hotel, Chamber Board Member Lauren is a fourth generation O’sider. After graduating from El Camino in 2006, she went on to earn her degree at Pepperdine University. Lauren launched her professional career in Los Angeles, where she worked at Discovery Channel, weather.com and Spotify. In 2016, she moved back to Oceanside to join her brother in starting a property management business which specializes in coastal development, value add and income properties. Their most recent development will be The Brick Hotel, an adaptive reuse restoration of a building from 1888, which will be located on Pier View Way. The Brick will feature ten guest rooms, a groundfloor restaurant, rooftop bar, an outdoor cafe, cocktail lounge and access to the neighboring beer garden. A former live-aboard on a 1979 Californian motor-yacht, Lauren loves to travel and has visited 6 continents and 30+ countries. When she is not traveling, Lauren enjoys serving her community and is also an active member of the Downtown Advisory Committee, the Visit Oceanside Board and the PBID Governing Committee. Porsche Copeland, Events and Programs Coordinator, Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Porsche Copeland is a true California native. Her North County roots run deep as she was born on Camp Pendleton and raised in Oceanside’s neighboring city, Vista. A Pageant girl growing up, Porsche claimed her crown as the 2004 Miss Vista Princess. She has spent the majority of her life loving North County and holds a special place in her heart for our coastal cities. Her love for the Oceanside community was even recognized by former Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood with her receipt of a Certificate of Recognition. Porsche has always been a “people person” and thoroughly enjoys organizing events that bring people together. She has an extensive background in hosting events large and small. Her most significant work was organizing and executing events for the Fort Campbell Spouses Club, a volunteer-run, non-profit focusing on social, charitable, and educational programs and dedicated to improving the quality of lives for our military and their families. Porsche is so excited to take on the role of Events and Programs Coordinator for the Oceanside Chamber! But, aside from her busy Chamber work, Porsche enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Rosie Hurt, Programs and Customer Service Specialist, Oceanside Chamber of Commerce An east coast girl at heart, Rosie Hurt grew up in a rural, small town in the Southern Adirondacks of upstate New York. Rosie studied New Media with a focus on graphic design and photography at SUNY Adirondack. While she had been passionate about art and working within the creative realm, it was there that she realized she was meant to pursue a career in digital art. To kickoff her career in digital media, Rosie secured an internship with Black Dog Designs, digital marketing firm consisting of graphic designers, web developers,

content creators and marketing specialists using market research to help businesses grow. From there, Rosie continued to grow her portfolio creating countless logos and branded content for businesses in the area. Rosie’s was previously employed as a Computer Help Desk Aide for a K-12 school district. Besides managing the help desk and creating web content, Rosie had the special opportunity to teach kids a variety of fun activities including how to program robots! Rosie recently moved to North County after marrying her now husband who is stationed at Camp Pendleton. While she only visited Oceanside once before calling it home, she is absolutely loving the beach, the gorgeous sunsets, and, above all else, our beautiful coastal community. Year after year, exercising more and eating healthy are the top two New Year’s Resolutions. We all have good intentions on New Year’s Day, but many go back to our old habits because change is never easy. A study by the University of Scranton showed only 8% of people stick to their New Year’s Resolution. So what can we do to stick to our goals? We talk with Dr. Lizotte from Seaside Medical Group in Oceanside to get his take on keeping healthy habits year-round. “With the holidays behind us, now might be a good time to revisit healthy eating habits,” said Paul Lizotte, DO, FACP, a board-certified Internist with Seaside Medical Group. “There are certain factors that you may have no control over, such as your genetics, environment, diseases and medications, that can affect your weight. But there are other factors that you can control all year round to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. I encourage my patients to eat a well-balanced diet, increase their physical activity and amount of sleep, and reduce stress whenever possible, especially at this time of the year.” To keep your New year’s Resolution while also enjoying balance in your life, Dr. Lizotte encourages his patients to consider these healthy eating tips: Make smaller goals for yourself instead of going straight for a strict exercise regimen. For instance, set a goal to go on a walk around your neighborhood every day for 30 minutes. Or make the goal to go to the gym two times a week. Make exercise a fun part of your day. Play beach volleyball with your friends or family, take your dog to the park and run with them, plan a hike in the area or find fun group fitness classes to attend. Exercise should be a fun part of your day, so try to find something that you will genuinely enjoy. Instead of taking things out of your diet, add healthy options into your diet. Do you want spaghetti? Add some squash and broccoli. Are you craving tacos? Add bell pepper and onion to them. This way, you are still enjoying the food you love, but you add nutritional value and get full quicker. Eat a small healthy snack throughout the day, like almonds or fruit, to help prevent over-eating later in the day. Containing your hunger is very important. Eat more slowly to savor the taste of your food substitute sugary drinks for water. Water is essential for your overall health. “Remember, balance is key in making healthy choices,” added Dr. Lizotte. “Still do the things you love and try not to get discouraged if you have a bad day. Every day we wake up, we have a new chance to make healthy choices.” Maintaining your weight during this time is possible by committing to two simple goals: thoughtful planning and paying attention to your food choices. Cox Communications has broadened its affordability portfolio by expanding its low-cost internet tier, ConnectAssist. The newly expanded offering is one of Cox’s many efforts to create digital equity and is designed for low-income households who don’t qualify for Connect2Compete, which is designed for families with children in grades K-12 who are enrolled in government financial assistance programs. “Helping to bridge the digital divide and bring digital equity to low-income households is important to us,” said Ingo Hentschel, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Communications in California. “We want to do what we can to eliminate the technology gap for people of all ages in our communities, which is why we’re expanding our low-cost internet options to include ConnectAssist.”

Oceanside Senior Volunteer of the Year Announced The recipient of the Oceanside 2021 Senior Volunteer of the Year Award was announced at the annual Senior Expo hosted by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce at Civic Center Plaza. Oceanside resident Shirley Thralls was awarded the honor, remarking, “Helping has always been in my blood.” Ms. Thralls, aged 90, has been an active volunteer with the Tri-City Medical Center since 2008 where her upbeat, outgoing personality was well appreciated. Shirley has also been a dedicated volunteer at the El Corazon Senior Center since 2009, greeting guests, conducting facility tours, and making calls to check in on seniors. During COVID’s “stay at home” orders, Ms. Thralls helped make over 1,500 calls to Oceanside seniors to help coordinate shopping trips, doctor visits, and more. Shirley shares her helpful knowledge of Oceanside community services with all who stop by the Senior Center during her volunteer hours – over 750 hours per year at the El Corazon Senior Center alone. Lina Borja, Director of Children’s Paradise in Oceanside has made masks for families at the center. The Sweet Teams program supports children, educators, preschools, and daycares, and the community using step-by-step strategies to keep learning centers, play yards and common areas safe and healthy. Children’s Paradise’s operational system is the only known platform in existence for these types of centers. Most guidance and templates being provided at the state and local levels pertain to grades K-12.

Scripps Gives 1,500 COVID-19, Flu Shots at Del Mar Fairgrounds Vaccine Station on First Day of Operation During the first day of operation of the new Scripps Health vaccination station at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Wednesday, 1,000 Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster shots and 500 influenza vaccine were provided to Scripps patients and employees. And while appointments at the station have been filled quickly, there were still appointments available to Scripps patients and employees in the following weeks. Appointments may be made through the MyScripps portal. “With flu season under way, there’s no better time than now to get immunized against influenza and COVID-19,” Scripps President and CEO Chris Van Gorder said. Van Gorder and Ghazala Sharieff, M.D., M.B.A., Scripps chief medical officer for acute care, clinical excellence and experience, were at the

fairgrounds to administer the vaccines. “It’s safe to receive both vaccines at the same time, and Scripps wanted to make getting both vaccines as easy as possible by providing both vaccines at Del Mar,” Dr. Sharieff said. “There is no reason to hold off on protecting yourself as much as you can from these potentially serious and deadly diseases.”

City of Oceanside Wins WateReuse Award of Excellence The City of Oceanside received an Award of Excellence during the WateReuse Conference this month. Oceanside received the Recycled Water Outreach/ Education Program Award for Pure Water Oceanside, which pays tribute to an agency that demonstrates a significant and wide-reaching community outreach and/or public education program that informs the community about the presence and benefits of water reuse. Scheduled to be complete in 2022, Pure Water Oceanside will be the first fully operational indirect potable reuse project in San Diego County providing more than 32% of the City of Oceanside’s water supply. The City has implemented strategic public outreach and education in order to provide an interactive experience that highlights the importance of this project. The City of Oceanside offers a bustling tour program, which allows you to directly experience and interact with program operators, engineers, and project managers. MiraCosta College Named in Top 150 Community Colleges to Compete for $1 Million Aspen Prize The Aspen Institute has named MiraCosta College as one of the 150 entities eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, one of the nation’s highest awards honoring achievement and performance of America’s community colleges. Food Scraps Recycling Program

In 2020, the City of Oceanside and Waste Management launched the Food Scraps Recycling Program for commercial and multi-family customers to guarantee compliance with current State legislation, AB 1826 and SB 1383, as well as support the City of Oceanside’s Climate Action Plan and Zero Waste Strategic Management Plan’s overall goal of reaching 75-90% diversion rate. Not only has this program reduced the amount of materials being sent to the landfill, but it also provides opportunities for businesses to right-size or down-size their current services to mitigate cost impact, if not provide overall cost savings. In Oceanside, recycling and food scraps services are cheaper than landfill services, resulting in savings when you minimize your landfill services and strive for zero waste. During the program roll out, the majority of the Oceanside business community has realized cost savings, totaling over $15,000 saved each month.

Over the last two years, more and more Oceanside businesses have subscribed to the Food Scraps Recycling Program, ensuring compliance with local and State laws before 2022 and paving the way for a more sustainable City. From restaurants and grocery stores, to even hardware stores and automotive shops, Oceanside has multiple leaders who demonstrate that a successful program is possible regardless of their industry or business model. One business in particular that has proven that any business can have a successful Food Scraps Recycling Program is Bussey’s Automotive (1402 Mission Ave; www. busseysautomotive.com). Family owned and operated since 1946, Bussey’s Automotive was one of the first businesses to work with the City of Oceanside’s Zero Waste Technical Assistance (ZWTA) Team to add backend food scraps recycling services to their existing recycling and landfill service, train their staff, and Winter 2022 | www.oceansidechamber.com

add signage to employee breakrooms, demonstrating the ease of adding a third stream. When first introduced to the Food Scraps Recycling Program, owner Dan Phillips had questions and concerns, especially being an auto service shop. But after a visit from the ZWTA Team, employee training, addition of interior bins provided by the City, and other resources, he quickly realized that this program was a great addition to his backend services and noticed that he and his employees created much more food scraps and food soiled paper than he first thought. “We love the program. It has really opened up our eyes to the fact that trash may not be ‘just trash’,” Dan said. “It can be recycled or reused, and disposed of properly.” SB 1383 will be going into effect January 1, 2022, further requiring all generators to have recycling and food scraps services. The City and Waste Management will continue to work with remaining businesses and multi-family customers to set up and roll out these services. Oceanside Students Recognized as Rising Stars by Local Business Community

Three stars were visible in the morning sky on Nov. 2 when the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce recognized seniors from three Oceanside high schools through its inaugural Rising Star student recognition program. The students, selected by their school’s educators, embody the mission of the program: “Convening the business and education community to honor Oceanside seniors for rising above adversity by demonstrating character, integrity, school and community engagement that make our city shine like a star.” Scott Ashton, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce’s CEO and event emcee, said they are hosting the Rising Star program as part of its larger workforce development initiative. “Through this student recognition and providing higher education scholarships, we are focused on engaging with our K-12 educational partners to ensure a strong workforce pipeline for our Oceanside business community,” Ashton said.

Senior Center featured speakers such as Mayor Esther Sanchez (pictured top right) and Superintendent Dr. Julie Vitale. Event sponsors and members of the Oceanside chamber’s board of directors attended. Representatives for elected officials presented each student with a certificate of recognition. KUSI and The Patch covered the event. The event highlight, however, was when the honorees individually addressed the audience. Introduced by her principal, Skyler M. Garrahy, Julissa Beltran Ramos from Oceanside High School was the first to speak and it was clear to all that she has risen above her challenges. She spoke poignantly of her traumatic home life and being “forced to grow up at the age of 9” but she gave credit to her mother for starting a new life. Although she struggled academically and emotionally, Julissa said she found her voice. She said she is grateful for her struggles because she has grown resilient despite them and has found hope and a purpose for her life. Julissa’s plans are to enter medical school and to study emergency medicine. Her mother listened carefully at the table to her daughter’s words of strength and courage, and then shared a loving tribute through an interpreter. Gianna Stafford from El Camino High School was described by her principal, Eileen Frazier, as making a transformation from a quietly defiant student involved in unhealthy relationships, to a student who was mature, focused, and confident. When asked what brought on this change, Gia simply said she wanted a better life and had goals she wanted to achieve. Now, Winter 2022 | www.oceansidechamber.com

with improved grades and outlook, Gia is a part of the Associated Student Body and has taken control of her own destiny. As she stood at the lectern and thanked her teachers and counselors, Gia stated that she had plans to join the Navy and then go into nursing, as she wants to make a difference, help others, and give back to her community. Her mother read a note from Gia’s father which said, “always remember on your hardest days, no matter what, as long as you have a fight and a fire within you, you can achieve anything. Don’t limit your challenges, challenge your limits always.” Vanessa Mendoza from Surfside Educational Academy was introduced by principal Eric Frandsen as an effective communicator and on a mission. Frandsen said, “The Surfside team is proud to celebrate Vanessa in receiving this well-deserved recognition.” School counselor Anna Rhine went on to describe Vanessa as a hard worker, a serious student concentrated on her studies, earning college credits in her hospitality class, and most notably a leader among her peers. Vanessa humbly spoke about difficulties finding her way in traditional high school. She was failing her classes and was discouraged until she was placed at Surfside. Recognizing her teachers and school staff as part of her success, Vanessa is looking forward to a working during the summer months and enrolling in MiraCosta College’s nursing program.

The Rising Star program is presented by Tri City Medical Center and Genentech and sponsored by San Diego Gas & Electric. At the end of the school year, the Rising Stars are eligible to apply for scholarships. Oceanside International Film Festival Kicks Off in February Established in 2009, the Oceanside International Film Festival is the longest running festival of its kind in North County San Diego. OIFF is an opportunity for independent filmmakers to have their work publicly screened in the heart of the thriving Oceanside art scene. It also gives attending moviegoers a chance to experience both local and international cinema in a locale known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and unique artistic community. Founder and owner of Angels & Gurus, Vanessa Sat Siri Kaur, is from Turkey and began her spiritual journey in Germany. It was there where she had her kundalini awakening and discovered her own angelic gifts. She began regularly practicing kundalini yoga which continued to magnify her abilities to assist many of her students in achieving peace, health and prosperity. She continued her training and obtained

certifications in kundalini medicine, physical therapy and yoga, Qigong, breathwork, Feng Shui, reincarnation and hypnosis therapy. During one of her most powerful spiritual awakenings, she got a calling and a vision that included the salt water and mystical guides that called her to come to California. In 2020, Vanessa moved her yoga studio from Germany to South Oceanside. Shortly after opening her business, the pandemic and lockdown began making it difficult for any business owner to stay afloat. Oceanside Companies Set World Record America has a new record for the World’s Fastest Electric Vehicle and the story behind that record begins here in Oceanside. Two local Oceanside companies, Moon Buggy Engineering owned by Trenton Wonsley and Revolt Systems owned by Eddy Borysewicz partnered together to convert Team Vesco’s “Little Giant” (a former Trenton Wonsley and Eddy Borysewicz gas-powered streamliner) to electric, beating both the national and world records at an average speed of 353.87 MPH. Borsewicz whose career started in software development, recently launched his new company Revolt Systems located in Ocean Ranch to focus on high-end electric propulsion and the electric hot rod industry. When the opportunity was presented from car owner Rick Vesco, whose family is a legend

in the racing industry, to design what is now the world’s fastest electric vehicle, Borsewicz immediately reached out to Wonsley who has engineered dozens of conversion projects over his career. Projects that include the first electric Ferrari, Maserati BiTurbo, dune buggies- and most recently was featured on Jay Leno’s Garage series where Leno himself drove Wonsley’s converted Porsche 912 and said it was “one of the best [he’s] ever driven.” If you see an old hot rod or classic car that silently flies by you on the road, it’s very likely Oceanside’s own Wonsley has had a role. “What our team has accomplished ultimately changes the competition in land speed racing and how the world views electric vehicles as it relates to speed and technology,” said Borsewicz. This is the first dual Tesla motor configuration used in a streamliner to date. Top speeds like this also wouldn’t be possible without the driving expertise of Eric Ritter, Team Vesco’s driver from Queens, New York who has personally topped speed at 430 MPH. “The torque curve is just so unreal to drive. It stayed hooked up the whole run and with a 2 1/4-mile time at over 303 mph it was like being a test pilot on a sled rail. I never thought I would be doing record runs in a Tesla powered race car, but I am definitely hearing 400 mph calling my name and a tour at the Tesla factory,” describes Ritter. Team Vesco is a family race team that began with Rick’s father John Vesco back in 1933. Their other land

Today, with help from Oceanside’s Revolt Systems and Moon Buggy Engineering, they now have the world’s fastest vehicles in both gas-powered and electric.

Building Community Through Tourism Leslee Gaul Visit Oceanside Everywhere you look, exciting things are happening in Oceanside. The stylish new beach resorts have activated our pier beachfront with attractive new spaces and local experiences. The restoration and reinvention of the Brick Hotel is not only preserving a bit of Oceanside history, but also uniting beloved Oceanside businesses like the Succulent Café, Stone Tasting Room Oceanside and Frankie’s Cocktail Lounge in the heart of our cultural district. The beautification of the pier plaza area and the debut of the Tremont Collective with its flagship Brixton store – a brand that originated in Oceanside – are other examples in a long list of projects that pay homage to our past and celebrated O’side culture while shaping our community of tomorrow. While many of these new discoveries appeal to outof-town visitors, they are as much about creating a vibrant community and opportunities for locals and offer a good reminder of the symbiotic relationship that exists between tourism and a local community.

This relationship was best described several years ago by a United Kingdom hospitality expert who wrote the following: “When communities invest money into tourism in a responsible manner that includes preserving the local heritage and culture as well improving infrastructure and beautification, it will in turn create better education, better leisure amenities, more cultural and special events and thus a better lifestyle for the local people.” He goes on to explain that when locals enjoy a better quality of life, they are more likely to reinvest back into the community, which creates everything from more jobs for residents to enhanced cultural attractions and special events. In return, the destination becomes more attractive to visitors, which boosts visitor spending to benefit local businesses. The destination also starts to attract a more quality visitor who is willing to invest in the destination by supporting

the rich and diverse experiences that connect them with interesting people, unique products and beautiful natural environments.

It’s fulfilling to see that this is indeed what’s happening in Oceanside! Over the last decade, we’ve seen unprecedented and thoughtful investment in infrastructure and beautification. In return, visitor spending has doubled, which has supported a wide variety of local businesses including retail shops, restaurants and cultural and recreational attractions. According to a recent study from Dean Runyan and Associates, a whopping 74 percent of visitor spending in Oceanside goes to businesses other than lodging, including the many small businesses owned by our friends and neighbors. What’s more, in the 10 years prior to the pandemic, tourism jobs for residents grew by 50 percent and tax revenues, which support parks, recreation, public safety, road repair, libraries and more, grew by 200 percent. As we continue to emerge from the pandemic, we know that tourism recovery will truly benefit everyone in Oceanside. Visit Oceanside remains committed to its role as a destination steward to help drive this recovery in a way that nurtures the positive symbiotic relationship with our local community. We continue to advocate for projects, such as the agritourism master plan, that preserve our unique heritage and landscape. We seek to spread visitors out so that businesses in all parts of Oceanside may benefit and encourage visitation during shoulder seasons to support a reliable stream of year-round visitor spending. We invest in programs that celebrate our rich cultural heritage. We support green and sustainable initiatives such as beach clean-ups to help protect and preserve our beautiful beaches. Through all these efforts, Visit Oceanside is proud to positively impact the quality of life in our City while sharing our inspired and storied destination with the world. She continues to uplift the community by providing a safe space for all to recharge and remember their true nature. The studio mainly offers Kundalini Yoga, the yoga of awareness. Classes are a dynamic blend of postures, mudras, breathwork, mantra, music and meditation that teach the art of relaxation, self-healing and elevation. Vanessa and the Angels & Gurus team are trained to teach how to balance the body and mind to enable all students to experience the clarity and beauty of their soul. Ultimately the goal is to excel in life no matter what kind of challenges or stresses people are faced with. In addition to yoga and Vanessa’s services, she has opened up a retail space within Angels & Gurus for other local artists and healers to sell their unique handcrafted items and offer their healing services. Vanessa believes that we can all find healing through many different modalities. Whether healing is found through crystals, essential oils, reading, art or body care it is important for all to feel whole and to seek a healthy lifestyle that suits all our needs. Vanessa continues to work on many projects and is looking forward to the grand opening of the café located inside Angels & Gurus. While the café currently offers a variety of keto desserts it will expand to vegan treats, keto coffee, tea and smoothies; all geared to be nutritious, delicious and satisfying for health-conscious visitors. RISING STAR STUDENT RECOGNITION BREAKFAST The Oceanside Chamber’s monthly Rising Star Breakfast will be held the third Tuesday for the remainder of the school year. The Oceanside Chamber’s Rising Star Program aims to champion students that have overcome significant challenges in their life, but have managed to keep, or get back on track, with their education. The Chamber will honor one high school senior each month from each of our area high schools at a breakfast event. Rising Star Breakfasts are open to all educators, family members of students being honored, Chamber Board Members, business leaders, community members and event sponsors. All donations to the Rising Star program are tax deductible through the Oceanside Chamber Foundation, a 501(c)(3). Tickets are $25 for Chamber members and $40 for prospective members.
