Human resources management is the process of acquiring and developing talent and engaging the employees that organizations need to accomplish their mission and goals. This includes tasks like hiring, onboarding and training employees. But it also includes planning for turnover and succession, as well as building a culture of well-being and engagement. This report provides information and resources relevant to these issues for #PublicHealth agencies. It is intended to help develop and maintain a high-functioning public health workforce. The Kansas Health Institute serves as one of nine regional technical assistance hubs offering dedicated support to #PHIG recipients. Working under the leadership of the National Network of Public Health Institutes, KHI serves U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 7, which includes Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. #KSLeg #KSHealth https://lnkd.in/gyw2vk5H

Informing policy. Improving health.
About us
The Kansas Health Institute supports effective policymaking through nonpartisan research, education and engagement. KHI believes evidence-based information, objective analysis and civil dialogue enable policy leaders to be champions for a healthier Kansas. Established in 1995 with a multiyear grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, KHI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization based in Topeka. The Kansas Health Foundation made its commitment to fund KHI's educational mission to deliver in-depth, nonpartisan information, research and insights based on the conclusion that health policy decisions often were based on fragmented, anecdotal and sometimes biased information. At the time of its founding, KHI was unique in its status as a health policy-focused educational organization that was independent, non-university based and supported primarily through philanthropy. Since then, other states such as Colorado and Ohio have established institutes with a similar model. KHI faculty and staff are drawn from diverse disciplines including medicine, public and community health, health policy and management, law, statistics, data management, anthropology, political science, sociology, health administration, communications and business. KHI continues to be supported by a core-operating grant from the Kansas Health Foundation, and also obtains funding from other regional and national foundations and state and federal agencies. Our Vision: Healthier Kansans through effective policy. Our Mission: Improve the health of Kansans through non-partisan research, education and engagement that support effective policymaking.

Disasters, whether natural or man-made, present unique challenges that can have long-lasting impacts on communities and individuals, especially communities experiencing health inequities. Consequently, it is important to integrate health equity principles and considerations into disaster recovery plans. This tool, developed for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment by the team at the Kansas Health Institute, is designed to guide Local Emergency Planning Committees across Kansas as they embed health equity principles and considerations into their local disaster recovery plans and can serve as a resource for committees and planners across the country. It is part of our work serving as one of nine regional technical assistance hubs offering dedicated support to #PHIG recipients. Working under the leadership of the National Network of Public Health Institutes, KHI serves U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Region 7, which includes Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. Today, Wyatt Beckman and I had the opportunity to engage with students at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, as part of Kansas Health Institute's initiative to weave the Health in All Policies (#HiAP) approach into the fabric of Kansas’s decision-making. Our guest lecture focused on equipping students with the tools they need to connect policies to health impacts, particularly through the use of a Health Impact Checklist https://lnkd.in/gErHjT6e. A special thanks to Erin Laurie, Assistant Professor for welcoming us into her classroom. If you're in education and interested in integrating this approach into your curriculum, we'd be interested in collaborating with you. #BCBSKSPathways

How can care coordination services in Kansas be improved? KHI asked that question to providers, insurance companies and parents. Here’s what we learned: · Apply a patient-centered approach to improve communication with patients and their families. · Use a single point of contact to build trust and rapport with families. · Communicate in ways, such as phone calls and texts, that meet the patient’s and family’s needs. A big thank you to the Kansas County Commissioners Association for featuring a presentation on #AI and #ChatGPT at the annual 2024 KCCA conference in Pittsburg, KS. This presentation highlighted how ChatGPT can support counties in making effective and efficient decisions. A special shout-out to AAron Davis from Wichita State University CEI for the collaboration with Kansas Health Institute and to Kimberly Qualls of the Kansas Association of Counties and KCCA Executive Committee for including this presentation. Another fun fact—back in 2012, I had the opportunity to work on a study (#HIA) examining the potential #healthimpacts of the casino, which served as the event location, before it opened. Now might be the perfect time to revisit those projections. https://lnkd.in/gy7K6CiX #innovation #decisionmaking #AI

This past week, the Kansas Department For Children and Families, Sedgwick County Government, Kansas Health Foundation and the Kansas Health Institute co-hosted a data walk to examine why more than 20 percent of the children removed into #fostercare in the state of Kansas are from Sedgwick County.
