Council adopted recommendations from City staff and the Downtown Advisory Committee to remove density caps on residential projects that are part of mixed-used developments in the Downtown District. The previous zoning ordinance allowed for a maximum of 43 dwelling units per acre. The removal of the density cap will allow for smaller, more affordable units, while maintaining all other development requirements including height, setbacks and parking. I attended the meeting to speak in favor of the density cap removal stating that “part of the Chamber’s Housing Creation Policy platform is to support growth in transit-friendly areas. We believe the recommendations of City Staff and the Downtown Advisory Committee are aligned with our position.” Chamber member and developer, Howard Jacobs provided important insight on this issue. “If one assumes the allowable building height and size are the same, density limits are inherently discriminatory against the less wealthy and favor the rich. Stated in the simplest way this is because a developer must amortize the land cost and other “fixed” costs over the number of square feet of building being constructed. The same size building with fewer units means they are bigger units which cost more to build and must be rented or sold at a higher price per unit. In an urban area with continued on page 8

North River Farms Responds to Community Input and Emerges Even Better The following is a commentary submitted by the Chamber to the San Diego Union-Tribune The recent story in the U-T from August 19 about North River Farms’ revised plan in Oceanside illustrates that there’s truth to the old saying that “no good deed goes unpunished.” Based on what they heard from local residents and City staff, North River Farms overhauled their plan to provide more of what the community wants and less of what it doesn’t. They cut the density of homes in the plan by 50%, dedicated 40% of the property for farming, parks and open space, and will provide desperately needed help for local farmers – by completing important infrastructure improvements farmers have been waiting for, and making a huge contribution to jumpstart the long overdue planning process for South Morro Hills. And that’s not to mention upgrading all eight intersections on Highway 76, or adding two new lanes to the College Boulevard Bridge that will leave traffic much better with North River Farms than it is today.

The plan dedicates land and funding for a new fire station site, plus equipment and long-term staffing. There are also the offsite contributions, like a half million dollars to upgrade nearby Melba Bishop Park. In total, North River Farms offers a $40 million package of public infrastructure improvements. Let that number sink in for a moment, because it’s as meaningful as it sounds. North River Farms is a model farm-and-live neighborhood. With 68 acres of working farms, a farmers market, a farm-to-table restaurant, hiking and mountain biking trails, and an Ecology Learning Center, North River Farms provides the ideal buffer between existing homes and farms. The beautiful part is that this buffer – complete with improved water and sewer infrastructure and roads – also serves as a gateway linking farms in South Morro Hills to the rest of the city. When folks come to North River Farms to see a concert in the amphitheater or do some weekend produce shopping, they’ll be just a stone’s throw from new agritourism businesses. And why not head out to a you-pick berry field with your

kids or visit the local winery, all while supporting your local farmers. It’s true that to make these benefits real, North River Farms needs an amendment to the City’s General Plan. That change is well worth it because it will deliver $40 million in infrastructure improvements, a new fire station and help for local agriculture. Under the current City General Plan, the entire property can be divided into 2.5-acre or larger estate lots without much review or oversight. If that were to happen, it comes with little requirement to upgrade streets, bridges, water or sewer systems – no requirement to preserve open space or build new parks – and no requirement to support home-grown agritourism.
In total, North River Farms offers a $40 million package of public infrastructure improvements. Let that number sink in for a moment, because it’s as meaningful as it sounds. Some have said we’re better to wait for the City to update its General Plan. There is no doubt that Oceanside warrants a new General Plan; the current land use plan is decades old. That is why North River Farms is dedicating funds to complete a community
plan for South Morro Hills. Opponents to North River Farms know these efforts can take years and millions of dollars to complete, and they’re using this smoke screen to protect their narrow self-interest by calling for a moratorium. The Union-Tribune highlighted the opposition to North River Farms. It is ironic that the most vociferous opponents to the proposed plan exemplify the worst definition of urban sprawl. Many living in their estate homes perched on hillsides often miles beyond North River Farms. These estates, which were approved many years ago before current environmental regulations were in place, are located on small unimproved roads, far from public services. In stark contrast to North River Farms, these estates have contributed little if anything to improve our roadways, schools, parks or other attributes needed by our growing community. Protectionism must be recognized for what it is. Oceanside deserves the opportunity to overcome the tired drum beat of NIMBYism and benefit from thoughtful planning that takes public input to heart. North River Farms is one of the best projects to come by Oceanside in decades. And the alternative (estate lots) may be the worst idea ever. This is a plan that has taken its licks and criticisms and has emerged better for it. It delivers what the community wants and needs, and it deserves our support.

Tatyana Wells (ASB) representative for the School Board where she can hold her own and communicate effectively in a room full of adult educators. In addition to her academic achievements, Tatyana is also a top athlete in Track and Field. On the Varsity team, she is Oceanside High’s top sprinter and attended CIF last year. Tatyana’s father is a Marine stationed at MCB Camp Pendleton and her mother is a radiologist. Coming to Oceanside High as a sophomore, she actively sought opportunities to establish connections, not always easy for a military transplant. She has been welcomed by both students and faculty, becoming a positive role model for her peers. Tatyana attributes her poise to her mother and her communication skills to speech classes she took in middle school. After she graduates in 2020, Tatyana plans to attend college and follow her mother in the medical field of radiology and ultrasound. She also wants to be involved in her community where she can develop her leadership traits and help to make a difference. Oceanside High School has a long legacy of producing sports legends, entertainers, along with judges, businessmen and women, and civic leaders. Young people are our future and there are many who possess talents and attributes to lead the next generation. Tatyana Wells is a perfect example, a young woman who is poised and ready for her future. She is enrolled in AVID (Advanced Via Independent Determination) a program that puts students on a path to college and career success. Her favorite subjects include social studies, math, and literature. Tatyana is excelling in AVID and is enrolled in two Advanced Placement classes. At age 17, she has the composure and self-confidence that many adults twice her age are lacking. She has a positive disposition, a charming personality and a smile that lights up any room. Oceanside High School has taken big steps to help students identify their talents. Over the last four years OHS capitalized on the opportunity that the California’s Career Technical Education Incentive Grant Program presented and implemented additional career courses as part of their career pathways. With the addition of an Environmental Science and Engineering pathway, students are learning about these growing industries and are doing so on new computers, 3D printers, and CnC machines as well as learning how to build solar panels and how to generate clean energy. Other existing pathways also were able to update their equipment, like in the Health Careers pathway: they now have an interactive anatomy table. Their Public Service pathway also received updated equipment. Next steps for Oceanside High School are to expand the internship experiences for all students in the different career pathways. Practical Recycling Tips for Businesses and Properties From Waste Management of North County

Did You Know? Half emptied plastic bottles and cans, food-soiled cardboard along with plastic wrap, trash and hazardous materials such as batteries and propane tanks, often make their way into recycling bins, resulting in contaminated recyclables, that upon arriving at recycling facilities, hinder the recycling process and cause safety hazards for workers. Since 2012, California businesses that generate more than four cubic yards of solid waste a week and multi-family complexes with five units or more have been required to have a recycling program in place in support of reaching the state’s diversion goal of 75 percent. As employers and landlords do their part to follow state recycling laws, Waste Management extends practical ways to engage with employees and tenants in order to further reduce their carbon footprint by focusing on recycling the right things the right way.
Influence proper recycling among employees and tenants with these tips: 1. Assign & Empower: Identify an on-site recycling champion who will take ownership of recycling efforts and help motivate others. 2. Learn & Set Up: Review the acceptable items as well as the do’s and don’ts of recycling with your champion to ensure sustainable practices are met. Place recycling containers in common areas, such as meeting and break rooms as well as recreation rooms and outdoor areas. Visit greenoceanside.org for more helpful tips.

Recycle empty plastic bottles, cans, paper and cardboard, keep food and liquids out of recycling and always place recyclables loose inside containers when possible. Remember to always breakdown cardboard boxes to make room for all your recyclables.

Engage & Sustain: Hold frequent meetings to promote your program as well as award those employees or tenants who have continuously done their part to stay compliant by recycling the right way.

How Bread of Life is Satisfying the Mouths and Morale of Low-Income San Diegans By Sherrin Guy

Hidden, just off I-5 in Oceanside, is an innocuous cluster of white brick business units, the area is a hive of activity; a neon vested man with a baton waves and directs me into my parking spot, as cars to and fro from this seemingly ordinary strip. A thrift shop, cafe, kitchen and several office units sit neatly side by side. Boxes are wielded out of the doors brimming with ripened fruit, canned goods and food packets, while a line of eager people - seniors and children wraps around the facade. This is the Bread of Life Rescue Mission, a Christian, nonprofit that has been helping the community for over 20 years. It is run

They believe, according to God, that every person has inherent value. “We don’t preach... we model and teach”, enthuses Tim. The charity’s model is compelling, as it targets some of the core, underlying issues of homelessness, while providing practical solutions.
entirely by unpaid volunteers and around 20 different churches in San Diego. The charity is strikingly radical in its approach (which is run in a drug and alcoholfree environment). It is a unique combination of compassion, wholeness and pragmatism that sets it apart from the others, “we really believe the problem isn’t the homeless issue, but the hopeless issue,’’ says 12 | Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Quarterly Journal
The mission’s buildings house a commercial kitchen, dining room, beds, and thrift shop. They also have office space for their client advocates, who help people transition to independent living by accessing other resources. Tim, who has worked for the mission for the last two years, has an acute sense of business and finance, which stems from his background in the banking/mortgage sector. He firmly believes that short-term, quick fix solutions such as vouchers and affordable housing are not enough. “If we get to them quickly, we can help them before the situation becomes chronic... and prevention is the big key,’’ says Tim. The preventive approach drills down to the team, their vision and their plans for the future. Liz Soler, Director of Life Skills and Leadership Development, comes from the world of Public and Social Services. She heads up the initiative to foster links and build relationships with outside organizations, so that people can become self-sufficient. According to the mission’s statics, 15% of the recipients are homeless (or neighbors without homes as Tim likes to call them), while an astounding 85% are vulnerable, low-income people with homes. “It’s our goal to prevent homelessness by helping them obtain work, be employed and save money,’’ says Tim. To that end, the mission’s next ambitious project is to purchase a building - (the Life Skills Academy), where it will offer qualifying students beds, shelter, training, education and life management skills for 12 months. “We are hoping that with the help of other businesses, grants and donations, we can make that a reality and bring wholeness to people’s lives”, says Tim with an optimistic glint in his eye. Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Endorses Better Choice Measure Organization backs measure for its creation of affordably-priced housing for local workers
The Oceanside Chamber recently announced its official endorsement of the Better Choice measure, recognizing the measure’s creation of much-needed housing for San Diego County workers and their families. Overall, 62 percent of the 2,135 homes that are proposed under the measure will be affordablypriced for working families.
Residents across San Diego County will have the opportunity this coming March to make a better choice for the future our region
“The Better Choice Measure will support workers who currently have to commute long distances – often from Temecula and beyond - to reach jobs located in the San Diego region,” said Scott Ashton, Chief Executive Officer of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. “There are nearly 130,000 people who work in North San Diego County and we need more affordably-priced homes for them. The Better Choice Measure goes a long way towards addressing our housing shortage while improving our ability to retain and attract talent here.”
“Residents across San Diego County will have the opportunity this coming March to make a better choice for the future our region,” added Ashton. “We’re calling on voters to prioritize housing creation, open space preservation and infrastructure improvements for our region by voting yes on the Better Choice measure.” If approved by voters in March, the Better Choice measure will also provide numerous benefits for the local community, including $56 million in local road improvements and $4.4 million in funding for fire safety and prevention measures, among others. The Better Choice Measure launched its campaign in July 2019 and has recently gained the endorsement of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Sheriff’s Association of San Diego County, San Diego North Economic Development Council and Cal FIRE Fighters of Local #2881, among many others.
The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce further recognized the measure as a better choice for the future of 1,985 acres of privately-owned land located alongside Interstate 15 and less than two miles from Escondido, Vista and San Marcos. Instead of being developed into 2 million square feet of retail and office space and 99 luxury homes as set forth in the County General Plan, the Better Choice measure would create much-needed housing, 36 acres of parks,19 miles of public trails and 1,209 acres of preserved open space.

Celebrating 20 Years of Making the American Dream Come True for Thousands of Small Business Owners By Lynn Pittman Over the past twenty years thousands of local entrepreneurs and business owners have visited The North San Diego Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to help them start, manage and grow their businesses. I was one of those entrepreneurs and the information and support I received was priceless. I am now celebrating a decade in business. The SBDC consultants have been with me and thousands of small business owners every step of the way. There is no cost to entrepreneurs and small business owners for private one-on-one business advising and most of the training and resources available to them. On July 1, 1999 MiraCosta College opened the doors of the North San Diego Small Business Development Center (SBDC) adjacent to the MiraCosta College Learning Center in Oceanside. It was formerly a Wendy’s restaurant founded by legendary
entrepreneur Dave Thomas. Instead of serving up burgers and fries the SBDC serves up technical training including one-on-one business advising, training workshops and access to resources including funding. The North San Diego SBDC works closely with business and community organizations including the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, local cities including the City of Oceanside and local legislators. The SBDC was recently honored at the “Meet the Buyers” in Oceanside by Senator Bates and Congressman Levin for 20 years of service to the community. “This year the San Diego and Imperial SBDC Network has already helped small businesses access over $100M in capital and increased their revenues over $60M,” states Sudershan Shaunak, Director, North San Diego SBDC. “Our objective is to help entrepreneurs and small business owners create, manage and run their business profitably”, continues Shaunak. The goal of

many SBDC clients is to become the “Wendy’s” of their industry, to provide a better life for their family and to help their community prosper. SBDC’s help them do that as well as saving money, time and stress. LOL-Life Of Liberty Adult Day Program CEO and Founder Debra Howard had a successful career in law enforcement, however she took a different career path. She found herself working to support adults with developmental disabilities while helping them achieve successful independence. She found her passion. Debra saw there was a demand for more day programs and decided to open “Life of Liberty” at 320 North Horne Street, Oceanside, CA (https://lol-lifeofliberty.com). Debra had no idea how to make her idea a reality until she made an appointment with the SBDC. “I knew I could do this but I just did not know how. I sat down with the Director, took workshops and met with business advisors on a regular basis. They helped me create a business plan, operating budget, projections, obtain a loan, get all my licenses, permits, hire the right people, find clients and open my doors. I could not have done it without the SBDC.“ “I continue to access and use the SBDC consultants and their training programs,” states Debra Howard, CEO Life of Liberty. “Our goal is to open more Life of Liberty locations not just in California but everywhere. And I know I can do it with the SBDC on my team!” exclaims Howard. The North San Diego SBDC has expanded and relocated to 2075 Las Palmas Dr., Carlsbad, CA 92011 adjacent to the MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute. The SBDC program is a partnership between the U.S. Congress, the Small Business Administration, (SBA), the private sector, colleges, universities and the state to help small business owners provide economic impact including job creation, increased revenues and capital infusion. Why the Oceanside Chamber Plans to Endorse Candidates As part of its strategic plan, the Oceanside Chamber has committed to serve as an effective voice for the Oceanside business community. We recognize that a strong and vibrant business community is key to the quality of life in Oceanside and that this quality of life is directly impacted by the individuals serving in elected office. We believe that “Pro-Business is Pro-Community. The Chamber’s Business and Community Political Action Committee (BACPAC) has been in existence since 2004. Many people in the community mistakenly believe that it is a new PAC, probably based on the fact that we have just recently begun pursuing the path of endorsing candidates. In July of 2019, the Chamber Board adopted Policies and Procedures for Endorsing Candidates. These will act as the Chamber’s roadmap on how to engage in the endorsement process. It is Critical to our Mission The mission of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is to “stimulate economic prosperity and foster a vibrant community”. For this to happen, it is critical that our elected leaders have a strong understanding of the importance of creating a business-friendly 18 | Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Quarterly Journal
environment. The Chamber is viewed as an important thought leader on business issues in our community and therefore our input into the election process is critical. The goal of our endorsement process is to support candidates that share the core values of the Chamber, including the support of free enterprise, a streamlined and predictable regulatory system and an overall environment in which business can thrive. We have a Mandate from our Members In a recent survey, nearly 90% of Oceanside Chamber members indicated that it was important that the Chamber is involved in helping business friendly candidates get elected. More than 50% indicated that it was “extremely important”. Chamber member input was sought for the development of the criteria of the candidates we would support. Summer Internships Offer Growth Opportunities for Local Students In recent months, the Oceanside Chamber has had the honor of partnering with numerous community organizations in support of the Oceanside Promise’s Latino Young Men Success Initiative Pilot Program.
Union, The Oceanside Chamber Foundation, Tri-City Medical Center, San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, FedEx Ground and the Oceanside Charitable Foundation.
The Initiative was launched in late 2018 in order to rally the community to provide additional supports and opportunities for some of our community’s most vulnerable youth. The program is multifaceted, providing the young men support in developing a multi-year plan for college, career, and life success. They participate in weekly sessions focused on three core questions: Who Am I? Where Am I Going? And How Do I Get There? A key component of the pilot is to surround the young men with mentors and role models who reflect their culture and background and have high expectations for their futures.
The internship sites include: The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, San Diego County Health & Human Services Agency, Primerica, City of Oceanside Fleet Services, North County Lifeline, Fagen, Feldman & Fulfrost, the Oceanside Museum of Art, and KOCT.
To maximize the experience of the program, community partners committed to finding paid summer internships for any of the students that desired one. As a result, a total of 11 young men were provided with a work-based learning opportunity this past summer. Five of the internships were paid for by the host sites and the remaining six were made possible by sponsorships from Frontwave Credit

Citli Mejia, Visitor Services & Community Engagement Coordinator at the Oceanside Museum of Art shared feedback from an employer’s perspective. “Gustavo Cader joined Oceanside Museum of Art’s team as an exhibitions and education intern. With the help of the Oceanside Promise partnership we were able to offer a paid internship experience. OMA’s staff offered an exciting customized internship based on Gustavo’s interests that also worked to meet the museum’s needs.” She added that the Museum staff shared their knowledge and expertise with Gustavo in preparing and installing exhibitions, and how OMA engages with the community through art. Gustavo spoke enthusiastically of his experience as

an intern, “Thanks to OMA I was able to gain experience in a field I knew nothing about. They helped me grow over the summer and get to know my community. I am thankful for the internship and for all the people who made this possible.” Gilbert Hernandez, an El Camino High School student who interned at the HHSA, shared his thoughts. “My experience with the Health and Humane Services Agency helped me develop and grow fundamentals within myself. That will help me grow and prosper as an individual in the work force, as well as opening new ways of seeing individuals. This internship also helped me develop strengths for my future career of a therapist.” Lifelong community member, Jimmy Figueroa who represents Oceanside Promise and Vista Community Clinic has played an instrumental role in the pilot program, coordinating the mentorship element. “The internship opportunities, experiences, and relationships that our young men established this summer were invaluable to their career and life aspirations. Yes, the internships provided professional development, but the investment of someone believing in them by providing them with these opportunities shows them that they are valued and that they are capable to succeed in these professional environments. Our students completed their internship roles believing that they can flourish in these spaces and that belief that they now embody is what made these experiences invaluable.” As the pilot program grows, the Chamber plans to seek funding to provide additional internships next summer.

Scripps Health Launches Region’s First Specialty Critical Care Transportation Team for Adults
Scripps Health has become the first health system in San Diego County to launch a specialty care transport program for adults that is focused on the continuum of care of some of the sickest patients at Scripps hospitals. Under the program, critically ill patients who require transport between Scripps facilities will be managed by experienced Scripps critical care nurses and accompanied by an American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance crew. Having a specialty critical care transportation team on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ensures that patients are safely transported with the most appropriate level of on-board medical care.
Sustainability on Display at MiraCosta College MiraCosta College’s latest construction project comes complete with a green roof and vertical garden adorned with succulents and solar panels producing energy stored in a row of batteries to illuminate the structure at night. Built by students in the Materials and Construction course and based on plans developed by the Architectural Design class, the Sustainable Design Structure sits along a pathway between the Theatre and Administration Building at the Oceanside Campus and serves as a model of environmentally sensitive engineering. “It’s basically an open pavilion providing an educational tool to

Dads’ Club is a Fatherhood Community Program in San Diego Teaching Healthy Relationships
Vista Community Clinic (VCC) has launched Dads’ Club, a program to help fathers succeed in the work force, become self sufficient and forge close relationships with their children and family members. Participants in Dads’ Club have access to a variety of free services and resources that will help them climb out of poverty and unemployment. Boys and Girls Clubs of Oceanside Awarded 2019 Sports 4 Life Grant from the Women’s Sports Foundation and ESPNW Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) received a $5,000 Sports 4 Life grant from the Women’s Sports Foundation to start an all girls’ volleyball program. The Sports 4 Life initiative, cofounded by the Women’s Sports Foundation and espnW, supports programs that help girls in four foundational areas - leadership, self-esteem, confidence and perseverance – with the expectation that growth in these areas will also support girls’ physical and emotional health and academic success. BGCO will address each of these important areas of girls’ development through their volleyball program. Volleyball is a popular sport in Southern California due to beautiful weather yearround and the multitude of beach volleyball courts. However not all girls get the opportunity to play; most volleyball programs are expensive and out of reach for low-income youth.

City of Oceanside Water Utilities to Receive $1.5 Million in Grant Funding The City of Oceanside is pleased to announce that it will receive $1.5 Million in funding from the Bureau of Reclamation’s WaterSMART Water and Energy Efficiency Grant, subject to Federal appropriations. The funding will be used to construct Phase 1 of a new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network, including retrofitting 21,689 existing meters and integrating the AMI system with the existing customer interface platform. Once the project is complete, 49% of the City’s meters will be connected to the AMI network. The AMI system will provide real-time information to customers about leaks, breaks, and other unusual consumption patterns.

WHY WE ENDORSE ... continued from page 18 Our Tax Status Allows the Chamber to Participate in Endorsements As a 501(c)(6) the Chamber can endorse candidates, with or without a PAC. The PAC is the mechanism that allows us to back up our endorsements with financial support. According to the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE): “Chambers of commerce in the US operate almost exclusively as non-profit entities known as 501(c)(6) corporations. Unlike charities, these 501(c)(6) non-profits have the authority under state and federal tax rules to represent their members in public policy debates. They may lobby and take positions on actual or proposed legislation, subject to local, state and federal laws. Chambers may legally endorse candidates for public office and/or ballot propositions (but most do not). The use of general fund revenues for chamber political and lobbying purposes is strictly regulated. The chief executive or another member of the staff is sometimes a state-registered lobbyist. The portion of any member’s dues investment
allocated to direct lobbying is not deductible as a business expense.� There is Movement Toward Chambers Being More Engaged in Endorsing Candidates A recent poll by the Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE) shows that just under 35% of Chambers currently endorse candidates. While this number is not yet where it needs to be, it is a great improvement over the past and is moving in the right direction.
NOTE: It is important to note that Chamber membership funds or general funds ARE NOT used for contributions to candidates. BACPAC will undertake fundraising campaigns in order to provide financial support to candidates.

From initiatives that aim to save Oceanside beach sand to the thriving farm-to-table scene, there is always a new topic to learn about in our growing city. Over the past year, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce has launched a program called the Oceanside Young Professionals Network (OYPN). The OYPN is designed to connect young professionals through fun networking and event opportunities while connecting them to the issues that affect us most, professionally and personally. As OYPN continues to grow deeper roots, we hope that more businesses will look internally to seek out candidates in their company who would benefit from this type of career development. Attracting and retaining talent already presents its share of challenges, so why not proactively foster leadership from within? Collectively we can accomplish so much and it’s important that young professionals learn how to strengthen their own voice around local issues and develop new ways to utilize connections and resources. We have some great OYPN events coming up in Oceanside and we encourage you to check the Chamber’s online calendar for details. passed Oceanside Planning Commission with a unanimous vote. The facility will provide an opportunity for entrepreneurial brewers to start a business without the costs and risks associated with starting on their own. • Entered into a partnership with the Small Business
Public Policy/Business Advocacy • The Chamber joined the Fight for Prop 13 Coalition.
The coalition is spearheaded by the California Business Roundtable, which has been working to protect Prop 13 on a variety of fronts. • Oceanside Chamber CEO, Scott Ashton was among
a group of business leaders that attended the SANDAG Board meeting in July to urge the Board to keep promises made to voters in the passage of the 2004 TransNet Extension.

Action Committee Workshop hosted by the Western Association of Chamber Executives. Workshop content included best practices from Chambers engaged in political action, tips from political strategists, and the perspective of elected officials who have worked with their chambers. • BACPAC began working on fundraising strategies/
outreach and candidate interview questions in preparation for 2020. Education and Workforce Development • The Chamber-
supported Latino Young Men Success Initiative finished its first summer internship program with 11 young men participating in internships. As the students head back to school, they are reconnecting with their mentors. See story on page 22.

Medical Integration (Mi) Strength Featuring Saima Khan By ChloĂŠ Nyenhuis
You may have heard the name or seen an article mentioning a new type of fitness program and wondered, “What is Medical Integration?� Medical Integration (MI), at its foundation, is small-group fitness training developed from evidence based research and led by nationally certified personal trainers with specialized certifications. This enables them to modify workouts for individual needs. It is the missing link between healthcare and fitness and only found at TriCity Wellness & Fitness Center. MI is composed of four categories: Medical Integration Strength, Medical Integration Ortho with land and

aquatic options, Medical Integration Cardio, and Medical Integration Neuro. Within the Medical Integration umbrella, the MI Strength Program is unique because it utilizes titrated training based on scientific data to help promote bone health, increase muscle mass, and improve joint integrity. Members, such as Saima Khan, begin with learning proper form and technique before moving to progressive resistance training. Saima joined the MI Strength program in September of 2018 and remains an active member. She had goals of losing weight and gaining muscle, which she has

achieved, but what she did not expect to gain was the “new found energy and optimism the program has given [her]”. She has found a community of likeminded members who keep her accountable and push her during the 1-hour workouts to give her best effort. They will often find themselves competing jovially to see who has the strongest grip strength or who can deadlift the most amount of weight! This community of “dear friends inspire [her] to do more every day.” The MI Strength Program is a beneficial addition to a healthy person such as Saima but it is also designed to provide a wellness option to those with a variety of medical histories. The MI Strength program supports those with or in remission from cancer, MS, recovering from an injury or surgery, arthritis, and many looking to lose or keep off weight can benefit. There are several members in MI Strength who knew they needed to make their health a priority and joined the program to build a foundation for greater independence and better quality of life. MI Strength and our other three programs are not unilateral workout programs, these specialized training programs are modified to each member’s needs by their trainers. For those in MI Strength, they understand that more than just exercise, they

need training. Training differs from exercise alone because of the structure and instruction provided by the specialized trainers. In her interview Saima raves about her trainers: “My trainers, Brandon and Kunal, are amazing! They truly care and want the very best for each and every one of us.” The structure of a planned workout coupled with the trainers instruction allows for those who are healthy as well as those who need modifications to exercise up to their full potential within a safe environment. This structure also helps with accountability; Saima explained that she appreciates how the trainers gear the exercises for her and keep them at her pace while still pushing her to become her very best!
