Esri Shares Ocean Initiative at User Conference. Esri, the world's largest GIS mapping software company announced its ocean initiative on July 23, 2012, at the company's annual user conference in San Diego.

China Research Sub Set to Dive. A new Chinese research submarine is positioned over the Mariana Trench and is preparing to set a new world depth record for a robot submarine.

California Publishes 2012 Climate Update. Our Changing Climate 2012 highlights important new insights and data, using detailed climate projections and refined topographic, demographic and land use information.

National Research Council  Booklet on Climate Change. The National Research Council has released a booklet to accompany its excellent video explaining climate change in simple, accurate, and understandable terms.

FAO Releases Annual World Fisheries Report. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has released a new report: 2012 State of the World Fisheries and Agriculture.

National Standard Set for Coastal Ecosystems. NOAA and several partners have developed a comprehensive national framework for organizing information about coasts, oceans, and their living systems called the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS).

80-Year-Old Lobster Set Free. A Connecticut man purchased a 17 pound, 80-year-old lobster in a restaurant and then released the ancient crustacean in the ocean.

Blue Notes #101 Published. The Blue Frontier Campaign has published Blue Notes #101 with stories on clean beaches, the Benchley Awards and more.

NOAA Ocean Explorer Education Workshops in August. NOAA will host two Ocean Explorer Workshops for marine educators on August 11. One will be held in San Diego and the other in Norfolk, Virginia.

Student Robot Submarine Contest Held July 17-22. More than 200 students from 29 universities and 10 countries competed in the 15th International RoboSub Competition, July 17-22 in San Diego.

Scripps Sets Funding Mark. Director Tony Haymet and his researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have been credited with topping $150 million in research funding for the first time without federal stimulus money.

California Salmon Fishing Best in Years. The California Department of Fish and Game reports that California salmon fishing is the best in years.

Lobster Abundance Sparks Promotion. A banner year for Maine lobster has depressed prices and the industry is creating a promotion to encourage consumption.

Whale Sitings on the Rise. The California coast is seeing an exceptional number of blue whales and humpback whales this summer. This Thank You Ocean podcast explains the phenomena.

San Diego Tuna Industry, a Look Back. Tuna fishing and processing was once a major industry in San Diego, this article takes a look back.

Arctic Council Business Summit. The World Ocean Council and the Arctic Council will convene the first Arctic business dialogue on September 17 in Reykjavik.

NOAA to Assess Arctic Navigation. Because modern fuel tankers must sometimes rely on soundings taken by James Cook in 1778, NOAA is conducting a 30-day assessment of navigational needs in the Arctic.

United Nations Call for Marine Experts. The United Nations is embarking on a World Ocean Assessment scheduled to be published in 2014. The UN is seeking an international pool of marine experts to serve as reviewers. Between 1,000 and 2,000 experts will be needed.

Mission Aquarius Publishes First Salinity Maps. Mission Aquarius, NASA's project to measure ocean salinity from space, has published its first maps.

Last Undersea Lab Could Lose Funding. Without a new source of funding, the last undersea research laboratory, called Aquarius Reef Base, could be brought to the surface and discontinue operation.
