WHY SAN DIEGO?

It’s seemingly intuitive to us who live here, but hard to put to words. Our friend Earl Edwards, the Athlete Director at U.C. San Diego recently asked SDSI’s Bob Rief to put his words to why college graduates should stay in San Diego. Bob’s reply was so convincing we couldn’t help but share it with you.

“Really? Hike, bike, skate, wakeboard, surf, cycle, soccer, rugby, motocross, run, swim, tri-athletics, hit a ball, catch it, kick it, look for it (golf), mud runs, Rock n Roll marathons, dive, sail. That's what happens every day here. It’s called the San Diego Lifestyle. We DO things and participate and everyone, baby to granny, is out there being active and healthy, soaking up the San Diego sun. Why wouldn’t you want to be here?

In the post-team or collegiate sport scene there are a large number of businesses who are in the business of sport. Getting the job of your dreams in one of these local businesses means staying in San Diego and utilizing our 335 days of sunshine per year to keep up an active and healthy lifestyle.

You won’t be alone either. There are 37,000 people employed in the Sport and Active Lifestyle businesses here in San Diego. You know many of them: Reef, Road Runner Sports, Competitor Group, TaylorMade, GoPro, prAna, SKLZ, Surftech, Nixon, Sector 9… the list goes on.

Did you know that San Diego ranks number 1 among the top 25 cities in America for the 18 to 34 year old age group, and number 1 in patents per 1,000 of population! And UC San Diego is located dead in the middle of it all: academics, adjacency to business schools and the local LARGE innovation community. I’ll say there’s no better place to stay after graduation. Work in a cool and contemporary business. Live a healthy lifestyle in a super healthy town. Maybe start a sport business here centered around your favorite sport or activity…settle in and make San Diego home base for the rest of your life. What, or where, could be better?

Looking forward to seeing  you out in our sports and acitvel ifestyle county."
                    Bob Rief

Productivity or face time? Many companies are struggling with the desire and expectation by employees to manage their own schedule, including the ability to work from home 1-2 days week. While more and more employers and managers are coming around to the idea that face time does not equal productive time, others continue to manage according to the old adage "If I can't see my employees, how do I know they are working?" As the number of tools that enhance the ability for employees to be productive outside the office, and as the war for talent continues to accelerate, I encourage our clients to consider the inclusion of a "work from home" mentality. As the CEO of a firm without an office, managing 7 employees remotely, I also recommend that they read the book "Remote" by Jason Fried, the Founder and CEO of Basecamp. Adding this perk will pay dividends for years to come.
