CCD registration 1

Sign up to Clean up at CCD!

It’s that time of year again – registration for the 31st Annual Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) 2015 is now open! On September 19, ILACSD will coordinate 100+ local cleanup sites. Despite the event’s name, our efforts reach far beyond the coast to stop pollution at the source by coordinating cleanups in canyons, and local waterways that all lead to our treasured coastline.

Register today for a cleanup site that is meaningful to you, whether it's your favorite beach or neighborhood park – our 100+ sites reach from Oceanside to San Ysidro and Ocean Beach to Alpine, making it easy to clean up close to home. Visit www.CleanupDay.org for details!

What makes this cleanup different? It's international! In addition to our efforts in San Diego, nearly half a million other volunteers in 90 countries will be leading their own cleanup sites to keep trash from polluting our environment. Come be a part of it!

Brittany's Green Routine

Although many of us have our health and beauty routine down to a science, it can be exhausting to keep all the different products from cluttering your counters, let alone our oceans and landfills, too.  If we look closely, not so environmentally-friendly materials, such as micro-plastics, are hidden in everyday products. Follow Brittany’s green routine to phase out hidden plastics, reduce waste, and simplify your routine

Summer Water Savings Solutions

Not sure where to start with water conservation? Well, you're in luck. Our Education Manager, Erika, recently put together a blog all about the basics of saving water. One of the best places to start is actually with your water bill. Learn how to read your bill, find leaks and tap into no-cost resources all in one blog! For example, SDG&E is offering water savings kits that include faucet aerators and a low-flow shower head to help get you started, all at no cost! Stay tuned for our upcoming water conservation video, starring ILACSD board and staff. We'll give you the low down on everything from rain barrels to leaky toilets.

Composting for small spaces

Over the last couple of years, more members of the ILACSD staff have started composting. Not only does this benefit their gardens and house plants, it keeps nutrient rich resources from taking up limited space in our landfills & generating greenhouse gases. Traditionally, you would need a yard to compost, but not anymore! Read on to learn more from our Hotline Manager, Amanda about methods that work for any size home and how ILACSD is incorporating composting into our environmental education programs!

Karla Peach - volunteer spotlight-cropped

This month, ILACSD would like to recognize our new Coastal Cleanup Day Intern, Karla Peach, in our Volunteer Spotlight! Karla joined the ILACSD intern team this month to support our outreach efforts for Coastal Cleanup Day.  With over 100 sites throughout the county, Karla will be busy recruiting volunteers and spreading the word about this event.  Karla is a San Diego native who recently graduated from Northern Arizona University.  She hopes to use her experience in community organization to work in international relations as a public servant.  Karla is most excited to see her work this summer come together at Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19th. Meet her at our Coastal Cleanup Day Packing Party, from August 17th-20th! Thank you Karla for your positive outlook and exuberance!
