Join the Clean Committee this Spring!

Have you heard about our Clean Committee? It's a great way to not only learn more about ILACSD, but each member dedicates their time to a specific project to support our staff and goals.

Two of our committee members Travis, a Senior Analyst at Cassidy Turley and Eleutario, a Chemist at the City of San Diego have helped us out immensely! Travis volunteers his GIS (Geographic Information Systems) skills to help us share our impact through mapping; his project will be featured in our upcoming annual report, coming soon! Our second committee member, Eleuterio led a cleanup Lake Murray last year for the 30th annual Coastal Cleanup Day. He organized 101 volunteers & who removed 130 pounds of debris!

Although the two projects are different, each helps support our mission to protect San Diego’s natural environment. If you're interested in putting your skills to use for a cleaner San Diego, check out our Clean Committee flyer.

ILACSD Teams Up with Local Businesses for Creek to Bay

We’d like to take a moment to highlight one of our newest business partners, BoxedGreen! This eco-friendly company is a local start up that helps San Diegans reduce their environmental impact by connecting those in need of boxes with nearby retailers who have boxes to spare.

Gathering enough boxes for our countywide cleanups has always been a tedious task. Thanks to a generous donation of boxes from BoxedGreen, preparing for Creek to Bay was that much easier! We’ve already put them to good use during our Packing Party and at our site captain meetings. Thank you for helping us give boxes a second, third, and fourth life, BoxedGreen!

Check out more local businesses that are lending a hand at this year’s Creek to Bay Cleanup on our blog here!

A Rind is a Terrible Thing to Waste

Earlier this year, Erika, our Education Manager, took it upon herself to find new ways to reduce the amount of waste she creates each day - she signed up for a composting course! Now that she has completed the Master Composter course through the Living Coast Discovery Center, she wants to share what she learned in hopes of inspiring you to reduce food waste in your life, too. Like many of us she was hesitant and nervous, but by the end she came out feeling empowered and knowledgeable about another way to reduce waste!

Storm Drain Stenciling Turns 21!

You may be wondering, “Why are we celebrating storm drain stenciling?” Well, twenty-one years ago, urban storm-water runoff was identified as the biggest contributor to coastal marine pollution so ILACSD decided to take action; that's when our storm drain stenciling program was born! In that time, ILACSD volunteers have stenciled thousands of drains with a pollution prevention message to remind people that oil, soap, gum, food wrappers, cigarette butts, and chip bags don’t belong in the storm drains or the ocean.

If you want to help stop pollutants at the source, join us for our next storm drain stenciling event happening April 11th in Clairemont Mesa, in partnership with Think Blue San Diego. Please click here for more details!

Donor Spotlight: Republic Services

Once again, Republic Services, a local trash hauling company, has stepped up to support the Creek to Bay Cleanup in a big way. They’ll be providing more than 50 dumpsters all over San Diego to collect trash picked up by volunteers on April 25th. Last year, Republic provided ILACSD with a total of 117 dumpsters that were used for Creek to Bay, Coastal Cleanup Day and other events throughout the year. Those dumpsters collected almost 150 tons of trash, which they disposed of at no cost to us!  Thanks, Republic for all that you do to keep SD clean!

Profiling ILACSD's Longest Serving Site Captains

Mindy & Jane - Dog Beach Dog Wash

For this month's volunteer spotlight, we'd like to highlight two of our longest serving site captains, Jane Donley and Mindy Pellissier from Dog Beach in Ocean Beach! Jane and Mindy own Dog Beach Dog Wash and have been leaders in their community for over two decades! In addition to serving as site captains for our two countywide cleanups, Creek to Bay and Coastal Cleanup Day, they lead monthly cleanups and hand out thousands of pet waste bags. This ensures that all 40+ acres of Dog Beach are kept clean and safe for our furry-friends and dog-lovers, alike. Thank you for all you do for our environment, Jane and Mindy!
